Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Apache culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wood and cloth cradleboard with a bentwood frame, wood slats, and a sunshade crafted from curved sticks. Cotton cloth straps cover the frame to secure the swaddled baby, while a leather strap is attached for the adult to wear. Cradleboards like this were traditionally made by grandmothers or other elder female relatives to keep babies safe and easily transportable, allowing mothers to keep their children nearby while working. This piece is likely from the San Carlos reservation, where cradleboards and other basketry were sometimes crafted as ornamental display pieces. However, the absence of beading and the visible wear suggest that this cradleboard may have actually been used for a child. Size: 39.5" L x 16.5" W (100.3 cm x 41.9 cm)
