Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A large hollow-bodied pottery female statue seated with a skirt covering her thighs. She faces forward, with one arm extended and the other touching her head. A thick neck supports a large head with spherical eyes set within the lids, a nose with septum ornament, pierced tab-shaped ears with earrings, and a simple flared cap. The surface is finished in deep red pigment, with creamy white dots forming a necklace and accenting the skirt. This figure is from the West Mexican shaft tomb culture, named after the vertical shafts used in burial practices. Pottery goods, vessels, and statues such as this were often buried with the deceased. Size: 7" L x 6" W x 12.5" H (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm x 31.8 cm)
