Rectangular Tobacco Box, hinged lid with engraved decoration depicting the 1794 Siege of Nijmegen by the Revolutionary French First Republic in a war against a coalition of European monarchs including William V, Prince of Orange (that later resulted in the fall of the Dutch Republic to the French in 1795), back engraved with owner's name "H.P. Hilarides", the date 1845, and "Pro Patria & Libertate" and "Voor Vreeden en Vryheyt" (for country and freedom in French and Dutch), also with images of abundance (cornucopia and basket), tree and flag, 1" high, 6 1/4" x 4 1/2". Small loss area to lid back corner edge, surface wear.
