More About This Item

Item Overview

Description: [Antarctic] Amundsen, Roald. The South Pole. An Account of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition in the "Fram", 1910-1912. Lee Keedick, New York, 1913. Translated from the Norwegian by A.G. Chater. Pencil inscription on front free endpaper “Compliments of Lee Keedick for R. Amundsen. July 1913”. 2 volumes. Royal 8vo, 392 p. & 450 p., 100 plates, 5 maps (3 folding), charts and tables. Spence 18. First edition in English, US issue, of Amundsen's account of his legendary dash to the South Pole, arriving on December 14, 1911, five weeks before Robert Falcon Scott's British Expedition. Provenance From the personal library of William E. Davies (1917-1990), USGS (United States Geological Survey) geologist, polar explorer, and recipient of the Antarctic Medal from US Congress. His work took him to Greenland, the Appalachian Mountains of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, and in Antarctica - where the Davies Escarpment is named after him; his bibliography contains more than 200 titles. Condition Very good. Bright dark blue gilt stamped cloth, gilt bright on front boards, somewhat dulled on the spines. Scattered light marks front and back, corners a little pushed in, crown and base of spines a little worn. Boards shaken but sound. Top edges gilt, bright. Other 2 edges of text block, and title pages, perhaps a little toned. Light pencil underlinings present in Volume 1 only, on some pages extensively. The odd faint crease to a few pages, otherwise interiors, maps, and plates in very good condition throughout, save for plate on p. 374 (volume 1) which has abrasion and a diagonal mark and the folding map at the end of volume 2 which has a small crease, and small closed tear at its bound edge. Ownership inscription of William E. Davies, 1943, on front free endpaper of volume 1. A very good copy of a scarce and important book, rare in this condition, the more so by being Amundsen’s own copy.
