Lot 4439: Unique 1967 Hot Wheels Redlines Custom Camaro (965 views)

Unique 1967 Hot Wheels Redlines Custom Camaro
Estimate: $400 - $800
Description: Manufacturer: Mattel Hot Wheels; Model: Custom Camaro; Color: Spectraflame blue w/ enamel green roof; Production Date: 1967; Note: Never put into production, black interior, made in US; Provenance: In 1967, almost 50 years ago, my grandfather-(Thomas Henry Matthews)-left his work at Rome Cable in Torrance, California because of a worker's strike, and found work as a mechanic at Mattel Toys in El Segundo, CA. Thomas worked at Mattel for only 6 months before returning back to work at Rome Cable, but while he was at Mattel, he had the unique opportunity of repairing the assembly line used to manufacture a new toy line Mattel was experimented with...this toy line would eventually be known as "Hot Wheels". While repairing the assembly line one day, my grandfather was told by his supervisor that he could take some cars home for his kids from different steps of the assembly, and so he did. These are those cars, 52 of them to be exact. He brought them home, showed them to his 2 daughters, and then kept them on the top shelf of his closet. When I got married in 2000, my Grandfather gave me the case & the 52 cars. I had known about the cars since I was a kids, but wasn't allowed to play with them. He knew they were special, and so he kept them in excellent condition all of these years, with the purpose of using them someday to bless his grandson. Within these 52 cars exists the original sweet 16 hot wheels ever made.
