Western Central Asia, probably Mesopotamia, Sumer / Babylon, ca. 2000 to 1000 BCE. This rectangular stone stamp seal is engraved on all four sides. One of the two major faces depicts a simple figure holding a spear in one hand and an axe in the other, while the opposite face shows a crouching winged quadruped. The two narrower faces feature tall, thin designs, which remain unidentified but may represent serpents or abstract linear motifs. The seal is in good condition and represents an intriguing artifact type. Accompanying the piece is a typewritten description signed in blue ink by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert (1926-2011), a distinguished Assyriologist and Fellow of the British Academy, known for his expertise in Near Eastern archaeology. Size: 0.8" L x 0.4" W (2 cm x 1 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private London, UK collection; ex-Mayfair Gallery; ex-UK art market, 1970s - 1980s
