Edna Weahkee Leki (Native American, Zuni Pueblo, 1924-2003) Zuni Fetish Bowl, ca. 1982 CE. A remarkable and unique fetish pot by renowned Zuni artist, Edna Leki, covered with serpentine fetish carvings. A simple pot is made by another Pueblo potter for Leki, who transforms the plain vessel by covering the surface in black tar and encrusting the surface in fine turquoise stone shards. Holes in the side of the pot allow for the rawhide and sinew cords that attach the 8 separately carved serpentine foxes and nacre / chalcedony arrowheads - all carved by Leki. Coral, turquoise, and shell beads are attached as well. This contemporary design meshed with traditional Native art is highly desired by collectors and museums! Leki is the first known female Zuni fetish carver, and learning from her father, a famous fetish carver, Teddy Weahkee (1890-1965). The first design for these mixed media vessels was created by Teddy and Edna together. Size of pot: 7" Diameter x 5.5" H (17.8 cm x 14 cm); largest animal: 4.5" L x 1" W (11.4 cm x 2.5 cm)

A similar pot by Edna Leki is part of the Albuquerque Museum colleciton, please see object number: PC1979.87.1.A-E.
