North America, Southeastern United States, possibly Native American Cherokee, ca. mid-20th century CE. A collection of six handwoven baskets and trays made of raffia and coils of pine needles, including one with a lid featuring a pine cone handle. Pine needle basketry is a traditional craft of the Cherokee people, with origins spanning centuries. This technique was later adopted by enslaved people on plantations in the region and became a valuable skill among white women during the American Civil War era, when resources were scarce. By the 1960s, pine needle weaving experienced a revival during the folk art movement, inspiring many non-Native artisans to embrace the traditional form. Professionally crafted pine needle baskets are often indistinguishable in origin, making it nearly impossible to determine whether they were made by Native American or non-Native artisans. Despite its enduring appeal, needle coiling has largely declined due to the labor-intensive nature of the process. Size of large tray: 9" Diameter x 2" H (22.9 cm x 5.1 cm)
