American, 19th century. Oil on canvas. Signature at lower left (difficult to decipher). A charming 19th century painting depicting a harvest scene with a composition and color palette that suggests the artist absorbed lessons of the Hudson River School, perhaps the Barbizon School as well, and worked in a Romantic manner akin to the early painterly works of George Inness (American, b. 1825 in New York, d. 1894 in Bridge of Allan, Scotland). In this painting, three petite staffage figures are reaping their harvest at dawn. In the middle distance, deciduous trees cast a warm glow as their leaves turn from green to red and gold; several tipis dot the expanse suggesting the scene takes place in North America; and in the distance, a body of blue water shimmers beneath the dawn sky's myriad shades of pink and lavender. A glorious atmospheric painting, replete with soft brushwork, a rich color palette, and undeniable artistry. Size: 9.25" L x 14.25" W (23.5 cm x 36.2 cm)
