West Africa, Burkina Faso or Ivory Coast, Senufo culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of wooden heddle pulleys, both with incised linear motifs, with the larger one mounted on a stand and featuring a hooked beak to resemble a bird. Senufo bird sculpture, often referred to as sejen (bird) or kasinge (ancestor), represents the mythological bird ancestor of the Senufo people. These pulleys were integral components of narrow band looms, used to raise and lower the heddle, separating warp threads to allow the shuttle to pass through. Beyond their functional purpose, heddle pulleys were often intricately carved, reflecting the weaver's pride in their craft and serving as a source of inspiration and delight while hanging at eye level during work. Size of largest: 3" L x 2" W x 6" H (7.6 cm x 5.1 cm x 15.2 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.
