East Asia, Japan, Nanboku-cho / Muromachi period, ca. 14th century CE. This steel katana, crafted around 1353 CE, is housed in a Shirasaya wood sheath. It features very good Jitetsu (steel quality) and an excellent Temper Hamon (temper line), showcasing the skillful forging of the period. The habaki collar is made of copper, and the tang is signed. Evaluated by the Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Sword (NBTHK) in 2006, it was issued the Tokubetsu Kicho (Especially Precious) designation and is accompanied by NBTHK Hozon evaluation papers. The sword is attributed to the Aoe school, a renowned group of Japanese swordsmiths from the Aoe region of present-day western Japan, active during the late Kamakura and into the Muromachi periods (13th to 16th centuries). Size in saya sheath: 34.3" L x 1.75" W (87.1 cm x 4.4 cm); blade: 22" L x 1" W (55.9 cm x 2.5 cm)
