Jimmy John (First Nations Canadian, Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka), 1876-1988) Wood Totem Pole, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden totem pole featuring an eagle perched atop various stylized animals, with circular eyes characteristic of John's work. The verso of the wings is signed in pencil. Born in Friendly Cove (Yuquot), British Columbia, Jimmy John was a respected and beloved Nuu-chah-nulth artist who began his carving practice in the early 20th century. His death year is listed as either 1988 or 1978, making him either 112 or 102 years old at the time of his passing. A descendant of Chief Maquinna and a chief himself of the Yuquot, John gained recognition for his exceptional skill in both wood carving and jewelry making.
