South Asia, Northeastern India to Burma, Naga Konyak culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beaded necklace with a wood trophy head pendant, strung on three cotton strands that coalesce into one strand before the pendant. The glass trade beads are a variety of types and include the turquoise blue Padre and spotted skunk beads. These beads were probably acquired in trade, from Europe and India, from the late 19th to mid-20th century. Although headhunting was banned under British colonial rule, headhunting practices and symbolism continued into the 20th century. The Naga people are a combination of tribes in northeastern India and northwestern Burma known for their artistry, particularly when it comes to jewelry and brassworking. During special rituals on their calendar, men and women dress in ceremonial clothing and ornaments, including necklaces like this. Size of strand doubled: 30" L (76.2 cm); head pendant: 3" L x 2" W (7.6 cm x 5.1 cm)
