Northwestern Europe, Russia, Ordovician era, ca. 488 to 443 million years ago. Two Asaphus genus trilobite fossils on a stone matrix. The genus Asaphus is known for its fascinating evolutionary adaptations, particularly in eye development! One trilobite, likely Asaphus kowalewskii, features very elongated eyestalks and a slightly enrolled body. It is attached to the stone matrix and may originate from a different region or a later timeframe. The second trilobite, an unidentified Asaphus species, has significantly shorter eyes. Displayed side by side, these fossils may illustrate evolutionary adaptations within the genus. The elongated eyestalks of Asaphus kowalewskii likely evolved to allow the trilobite to bury itself in substrate, leaving only its eyes exposed to detect prey and avoid predators. Size of stone matrix: 5" L x 4" W (12.7 cm x 10.2 cm); trilobite: 2" L x 1.5" W (5.1 cm x 3.8 cm)
