Description: [Early Printing] 5 volumes, 3 from Corpus Juris Civilis Justinianei and 2 from Corpus Juris Canonici. Each volume published in Lugduni [Lyons], Sumptibus Ioannis Pillehotte [printed by Jean Pillehotte]. Volumes are as follows: 1) Codicis Sacratissimi Imperat. Iustiniani .... [Justinian's Code]. Libri XII. 1612. 2) Corpus Juris Civilis Iustinianei. 1612. 3) Volumen Legum. 1612. Bound with Institutionum, also 1612. 4) Decretales D. Gregorii Papae IX. 1613. 5) Decretum Gratiani. 1613. This version includes the comments of the Italian legal expert Accurse (1182-1260) and annotations by Antoine Leconte (1517-1586), Denis Godefroy (1549-1622) and Jacques Cujas (1522-1590). Each tittle page featuring a lion rampant with banner displaying motto "De Forti Dulcedo" [out of the strong came forth sweetness]; the edition is sometimes known as "lion moucheté". All large folios, early full leather bindings with central gilt embossed armorial device at center of front board. Spines with raised bands and, where present, upper spine "Corpus Iuris Civiliis", below the individual volume title. Condition Spines perished, losses of leather from surface of covers, which are loose/detached. Foxing, toning to varying degrees. Some areas of insect damage.
