Michael J. Lynch (American, b. 1950). Self-Portrait, oil on board, 1979, signed and dated at lower right + Portrait of Cowboy, watercolor & gouache, signed Ramon B. at lower left, n.d. A wonderful pair of portraits. The first is a self-portrait of American artist Michael Lynch. The artist captures himself in a bust-length format at age 29. Sporting a full mustache and beard, Lynch faces the viewer with piercing eyes and a serious expression. He dons a white shirt and a blue cowboy hat adorned with a leather band. All is rendered in an Impressionist manner with lush, loose brushstrokes and a rich color palette. Paired with Lynch's self-portrait is a miniature cameo portrayal of a man in a cowboy hat rendered in watercolor and gouache in an earthtone palette and signed "Ramon B." Size (larger - Lynch): 10" L x 8" W (25.4 cm x 20.3 cm) Size (frame): 14.375" L x 12.25" W (36.5 cm x 31.1 cm)

About Michael J. Lynch: "Michael Lynch grew up in Denver, Colorado. He exhibited an interest in drawing at an early age and, through a family move to Chicago in the early sixties, he was introduced to the great variety of work at the Chicago Art Institute. Of particular interest was the work of the American and European realist and impressionist painters. His enthusiasm for traditional painting led to the discovery of more and more information on artists and the seemingly endless possibilities of artistic expression. The idea of pursuing a career as a professional artist began to emerge.

After receiving his college degree, Lynch moved to Washington D.C. where he lived and worked for three years, travelled extensively throughout the United States and abroad, and spent countless days in museums, galleries, and artist's studios. Returning to Denver in 1976, he had the great good fortune of becoming acquainted with the very serious group of painters and sculptors living and working in the area at that time. The group included Ned Jacob, Mark Daily, George Carlson, Len Chmiel, Ken Bunn, Hollis Williford, Bill Sharer, and Kang Cho...all consummate professionals in the art community. Lynch began his career as a full time artist in Denver in 1978.

Lynch's work, although primarily landscape also includes marine, portrait, figure, still life, and cityscape. His work is in many corporate and private collections throughout the U.S., Europe, and Japan and a number of his pieces were purchased for the U.S. Ambassador To The Netherlands residence in The Hague. He has had numerous one man shows throughout the country and has exhibited in and been represented by many fine galleries including John Pence, San Francisco, Gerald Peters, Santa Fe, and Fenn Gallery, Santa Fe.

Lynch has been a full member of the National Academy of Western Art, an A.O.A. Master / Artists Of America, Exhibitor at the Coors National Western Art Invitational (Recipient of the 2012 Artist's Choice Award ), and Salon D' Arts Invitational. He continues to show at the annual Prix De West Exhibit at the National Cowboy Hall Of Fame in Oklahoma City. He was elected to membership in the Chelsea Arts Club, London in 1982. His work has appeared in many art publications including The American Artist ( cover ) , Southwest Art, American Art Review, and Art of The West.

He has taught workshops throughout the country since 1989 and has an extensive resume as a lecturer on and teacher of the practice of outdoor painting. He has also created hand crafted 22k water gilt picture frames for much of his own work and produced one of a kind custom frames for collectors of his commissioned pieces. His commissioned work includes a recent major piece for the Cherokee Club in Atlanta, Ga.

Lynch has designed and built a number of art studios and has been a design consultant on several architectural projects as well."

  • Lynch self-portrait: overall excellent. Signed and dated by the artist at lower right. Identified on verso in black pen. Frame is also very nice and fit with suspension hardware. Ramon B: Mounted behind glass in oval frame. Portrait has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be excellent. Hand signed "Ramon B" on lower left.
