The Punu mask represent idealized female ancestors' faces. The white color on the mask is genderless, a symbol of peace, deities, spirit of the dead and the afterlife. It is the predominate color in funeral celebrations and memorials. The raised scarification mark on the forehead indicates perfect symmetry of the face. This type of mask with carved wooden horns after that of the Water Buffalo, and animal pelts, appears in masquerades during funeral celebrations and is referred to as Mukudj.
