More About This Item

Item Overview

Description: [Americana]
The Acts of Assembly Now in Force in The Colony of Virginia
(Williamsburg: W. Rind, A. Purdie and J. Dixon, 1769). Folio. Early brown sheep, re-backed in first half of 20th century; new corners and endpapers (restored sometime early 20th century). Title-page and pp. 1-12 supplied in facsimile, tape repairs to pp. 13-16, toning and spotting, scattered chipping to margins, occasional dampstaining. Index at rear defective and incomplete, lacking pp. 561-577. Evans 11511.

This volume was found by Dr. Jefferson Hughes of Gloucester County, Virginia, as he was attending the wounded after the Battle of Big Bethel, arguably the first land battle of the American Civil War, in June 1861. Virginia state historians believe this volume was removed from a private law office by Union soldiers and abandoned on the battle field. This volume remained for many years in the possession of the Hughes family. See Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Virginia, March 18, 1928.
