DESCRIPTION: Album containing numerous "carte de visites" or CDVs. Visiting cards were traditionally used to introduce oneself in social settings, however CDV photographs only get their name from the general size of a visiting card. CDVs in the 29th century were made from albumen print, a thin paper material, and then mounted on a thicker board. On the back of each CDV is the photography publishers. This album contains CDVs all created by German publishing companies. Some companies included: Gebruder Rummel- Germersheim, Gebr. Ferner- Edenkoben, Adolph Hutzler- Edenkoben. CDVs depict various men, women, and children. Some men are in military or officer uniforms. Some photographs are portraits and other contain images of the whole body. Some photographs have been colorized using hand-tinting techniques.
Album is made from gutta-percha, a popular material for photography in the 19th century. Album contains a silver-plate closure and an image of an angel on the front cover with a silver-plate border.
