Native American, Southwestern United States, Ancestral Puebloan / Puebloan, ca. 1000 to 1800s CE. This is a traditional slab-style metate paired with a mano, an essential toolset in ancient grinding and food preparation practices. The mano is thick and ovoid, with one smooth side shaped from gripping and the other side pitted from use. The metate has a tray-like shape with a shallow depression in the center, formed through countless hours of scraping and grinding with the mano. The smooth and indented surface indicates extensive use. Metates function similarly to mortars and pestles, serving as nether stones for food preparation, such as grinding herbs and corn into flour. They were also used for other utilitarian purposes, like pulverizing clay or pigments. Size of metate: 8" L x 6.6" W x 2.25" H (20.3 cm x 16.8 cm x 5.7 cm)
