Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery bowl of broad form with a round but stable base, a carinated midsection, and a thick rim overhanging the basin. The exterior boasts elaborate diamond patterns and crosshatched panels in red and black pigment along the upper body, and both the basin and lower body are undecorated save for a band of red pigment around the rim. Chupicuaro ceramics are known for their strength in patterning as well as the integrity of the ceramic itself. This mesmerizing decoration may have once held deep symbolic significance.
