Photograph. John Keen’s bicycle factory and repair shop in Thames Ditton on the Portsmouth Road in England. Pictured are 4 High Wheelers, Pneumatic and Hard Tired (includes 3 cross framed) safeties, and an Olympia pneumatic tandem tricycle. Keen was one of England’s most famous and best bicycle racers and manufacturers of the 1870s and early 1880s. He went to America to complete. Pope recognized Keen and his racing prowess on the first famous poster. This photo taken beside the Angel Inn. Signage for his shop included “JOHN KEEN - CYCLE MANUFACTURER - REPAIRER” beside the door, a poster for Hillman, Herbert & Cooper poster as well as a sign for “Home Trainers”. This photo was taken from the original glass plate negative. An early to mid-20th century production of a circa 1892 image. See Andrew Ritchie’s book King Of The Road page 132-3. Exterior of the frame is 16” x 13”. Good condition.
