Pair of Altona Louis XVI Mahogany Commodes

late 18th century, German, each with a rectangular top with turreted corners, above a conforming case fitted with three drawers, flanked to either side by fluted uprights, raised on canted block feet.

  • **Both cases are tight and solid, with no movement observed at the glue joints.

    Both have been polished in the past. The surfaces exhibit normal minor blemishes and wear, most beneath the polished finish. The tops now with some small areas of thin or lifted finish, faint water rings and blemishes.

    All locks are present. No key.

    There are several age-related shrinkage cracks, none of which appear to affect the pieces' structural integrity, including some extending in up to 6" from the edge of the tops, and vertical ones on the sides, the most notable of which is one that runs the height of the side with some separation at its lower 10".
