East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely serving tray, crafted from a single slab of huanghuali wood. The rectangular form has been skillfully hollowed to reveal the wood's striking grain and to create graceful, curved edges. This elegant piece showcases the remarkable beauty of huanghuali, a prized wood in Chinese craftsmanship, and virtually shimmers when touched by light. A character signature mark is etched into the verso for an unidentified maker. Huanghuali, also known as Chinese rosewood, was once widely used during the Ming and Qing dynasties for furniture and luxury items, but has become increasingly scarce in the past century due to overharvesting, making such pieces highly sought after today.
