Western Europe, England, ca. early 16th to early 18th century. A brass and iron mold tool designed for forming ammunition balls, with a funnel style resembling examples used for early matchlock firearms. The brass mold is attached to iron handles shaped like pliers and features a funnel-shaped mouth for pouring molten liquid - usually lead - to form musket balls. The mold itself is hemispherical, with the two sides closing to create a spherical ball. Lead melts at a relatively low temperature, which allowed soldiers to carry these molds along with crucibles to produce ammunition over campfires while on the march. Size: 5" L x 1.5" W (12.7 cm x 3.8 cm)
