Egypt, Late Dynastic Period to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A mold-formed faience amulet depicting Anubis, the god associated with mummification and the afterlife. Anubis is shown in a striding pose with his left leg advanced, standing atop an integral plinth. His arms rest rigidly at his sides, fists clenched, and he bears his characteristic jackal-headed form with pointed ears and a narrow snout. Enveloped in a lustrous blue glaze, often linked to the Nile's life-giving waters symbolizing rebirth, the amulet exudes divine authority. Faience, prized for its brilliance and association with immortality, was believed to capture the regenerative power of the Nile. A biconically drilled suspension hole behind the shoulders indicates it was designed to be worn or tucked inside a mummy bundle. Size: 0.88" L x 0.56" W x 2.5" H (2.2 cm x 1.4 cm x 6.4 cm).
