J. Noble, 1st Senator Indiana, Court Document

Manuscript Document Signed, "James Noble", as attorney for defendant, 1p, 7.875" x 12.75", Franklin County, circa 1813. Docketing to verso. Folds with paper loss at intersections, moderate browning at folds, missing bottom right corner, ink splatter at blank area of verso, else near Very Good.

James Noble files a plea of "not guilty" for his client, Patrick McCarty, in the "wrong and injury" against James Wilson. The legal document reads, in full, "And the said Patrick McCarty by James Noble his attorney, comes and defends the wrong and injury when...and says, that he is not guilty of the...above laid to his charge in manner and form, as the said plaintiff hath above declared against him, and of this he puts himself upon the county."

James Noble (1785-1831) was the first U.S. Senator from the state of Indiana. He studied law and passed the bar in Kentucky, after which he moved to Indiana and settled in Brookville around 1808. Once settled in Indiana he became a ferryboat operator, a judge, and in 1816, a member of the state's first constitutional convention as a delegate from Franklin County. Noble was elected as a Crawford faction Democratic Republican (later an anti-Jacksonian Democrat). He was re-elected to the U.S. Senate for two more terms and served from December 11, 1816 until his death.
