J. Johnson Appoints Electors for 1852 Presidential Election

JOHNSON, JOSEPH. Partially Printed Document Signed, "Jos. Johnson", as Governer, 1p, 10" x 8", Richmond, July 23, 1852. Intact paper-covered red Commonwealth seal. Endorsement at verso. Flattened folds with some separation, minor toning, wear to bottom edge, else near Fine. 

Johnson appoints "Col. William Shields, Egbert Vanburen and David Wise Commissioners of the County of Bath to superintend the Election of Electors for a President and Vice-President of the United States, to be held in and for the said County in the present year."

The 1852 United States Presidential Election was held on Tuesday, November 2, 1852. The Democratic Party ticket was Franklin Pierce, Former U.S. Senator from New Hampshire, for President, and William R. King, U.S. Senator from Alabama, for Vice President. The Whig Party ticket was Winfield Scott, Commanding General of the U.S. Army, for President, and William A. Graham, U.S. and Confederate Senator, for Vice President. Pierce and King won a comfortable popular majority, carrying 27 of the 31 states.

Joseph Ellis Johnson (1785-1877) was a farmer, businessman and politician who served as United States Representative and became the 32nd Governor of Virginia from 1852 to 1856, the first Virginia governor to be popularly elected, as well as the only Virginia governor from west of the Appalachian mountains. During the American Civil War, he sympathized with the Confederacy, but returned to what had become West Virginia for his final years.

In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
