Irma Rene Koen (1884-1975)

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse

First quarter of the 20th Century.

The sunlit coastal view of figures near a lighthouse, and a sailboat on the water, is signed in red pigment lower right front. The work in gouache on paper is displayed in a custom, gilded wood frame of the period, presumably the original.

Ms. Koen was an Illinois artist who traveled the world, eventually settling in Mexico later in life. Throughout the 1920s, she attended a summer arts school near Boothbay Harbor in Maine, approximately 18 miles from the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse near Bristol, Maine. A photograph from the 1930s is posted as reference.
