Roman, Republic period, ca. 1st century BCE; Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A delightful Roman bloodstone intaglio hand-carved with the image of the Greek and Roman god Apollo, mounted in a gold ring to be wearable. The handsome male deity sits in a stool with a bow slung over one shoulder as he hunches over his lyre - a symbol of the god and an instrument he is said to have invented. Boasting a hue of deep forest green, the stone is set in a minimalist yet elegant gold ring with a stepped border and slender band. Size of intaglio: 0.4" L x 0.3" W (1 cm x 0.8 cm); of band: 0.7" L x 0.6" W (1.8 cm x 1.5 cm); US ring size: 1.75; gold quality: 75% (18 karats); weight: 1.8 grams

Apollo has been recognized as a god of archery, music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and diseases, the Sun and light, poetry, and more. One of the most important and complex of the Greek gods, he is the son of Zeus and Leto, and the twin brother of Artemis, goddess of the hunt. He is considered to be the most beautiful god and is represented as the ideal of the kouros (ephebe, or a beardless, athletic youth).

Please note that the gold ring band is ovoid and though it measures to a 1.75 US ring size on the mandrel, the diameter is about 15 millimeters (0.6 inches) which corresponds to about a 4.25 US ring size.
