The Unclassed A Novel by George Gissing in Three Volumes. London: Chapman and Hall 1884. FIRST EDITION bound with original cloth binding.

A NEAR FINE COPY OF GISSING'S RARE SECOND BOOK

Ranked first on Sadleir’s list of Comparative Scarcities, The Unclassed, with its stark realism and pessimistic perspective on human affairs, earned admiration from both Thomas Hardy and George Meredith.

George Gissing (1857–1903) was an English novelist renowned for his realistic depictions of society and the working class. His works often explore the harsh realities of life and the economic struggles faced by individuals in a rapidly evolving society. Gissing’s writing is distinguished by its critical examination of social conditions and its empathetic portrayal of the underprivileged.

Gissing’s novels are notable for their detailed and realistic representation of Victorian society. He delves into themes of social class and economic disparity, reflecting his own experiences with poverty and marginalization. His critical perspective on social norms and the economic system provides a nuanced view of the challenges faced by the poor.

Among his significant works are "The Nether World", "New Grub Street", and "The Odd Women". These novels address issues of social class, gender inequality, and personal ambition. Gissing’s contributions to social realism and his ability to capture the complexities of human experience make his work important in the context of modern literature.
