FRENCH BLOCK-PRINT COTTON WHOLE-CLOTH QUILT, hand-stitched, top with three joined panels featuring two panels being pieced with additional small panels, made from small-scale block-printed cotton fabrics, primary design consisting of small detached flower sprays in red, brown, and blue, overall latticed quilting with chain quilting along each side edge, knife binding, heavily stuffed with cotton batting, three-paneled plain cotton backing. Stamped or ink-signed "VN / F" initials along one edge. Together with a possibly American, French, or Scottish Marseille-type bed cover/counterpane, probably machine-woven, white cotton stuffed with cord, whole panel, featuring a large center medallion within a shaped frame with large floral devices in the corners, four sides with border of stylized tulips and palmettes. Two pieces total. Quilt 1790-1830; bed cover second half 19th century. Quilt 89 1/2" x 90 1/2"; bed cover 85 1/2" x 86".
Catalogue Note: According to the object catalogue entry for the quilt, "Peter Floud, Victoria & Albert Museum, on seeing blockprint in 1958 commented: 'French, circa 1770, very good, high-class. The two blues are rather unusual.'"

  • Quilt top in fair overall condition with moderate to heavy toning, scattered losses to print mostly on dark-coloring, other scattered holes and stains, some mends and patches, backing in good condition with moderate to heavy toning and some scattered stains/spots; bed cover in fair to good overall condition with light to heavy toning, scattered stains/spotting, some holes, a patch mend to edge of center medallion.
