Franz von Defregger (1835-1921) was an Austrian artist best known for his representations of rural life. The artist’s style is characterized by the use of tonal colors and visible brushstrokes, which he used to depict street scenes, tavern interiors, and young children. He is often identified with the painting The Storyteller, in which a mother sits in a darkened room as she tells a story to her four children. Born April 30, 1835 in Stronach, Tyrol, Defregger developed an interest in the arts from an early age, studying woodcarving and drawing under sculptor Michael Stolz. Despite his low social standing, he obtained admission to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1861, where he became associated with the Munich School painters, working alongside Ludwig von Heterich and Dixie Selden. Thereafter, he received further training at the École des beaux-arts in Paris, and subsequently took part in the Salon des Refusés in 1863. Defregger died on January 2, 1921 in Munich, Germany. His work is currently held in the collections of the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, and the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, among others.
