Egypt, Third Intermediate to early Late Period, ca. 10th to 7th century BCE. A hand-carved steatite amulet glazed a pale green-hue depicting the Egyptian dwarf god, Bes, in the round. A horizontal drill hole perforates through his head, allowing the piece to be suspended as a charm. Bes was a protector of the household and warded off all malevolent things, making him a popular talisman for many Egyptians to carry. Size: 0.93" L x 0.4" W (2.4 cm x 1 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-F. Becker collection, Munich, Germany, 1980s
