Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th to 20th Dynasty to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 1550 to 30 BCE. A carnelian stone "button" scarab carving with a ribbed suspension loop on the underside. The insects limbs are delineated on the underside as well. Button scarabs, a form of amulet, representing the sun god Ra's daily rebirth and the concept of regeneration, were immensely popular in ancient Egypt for over a millennium. These symbols of protection and renewal were worn by the living as jewelry and placed with the deceased to ensure safe passage into the afterlife. Size: 1.1" L x 0.75" W (2.8 cm x 1.9 cm)
