Egypt, Late Dynastic Period to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. This mold-formed faience amulet depicts the goddess Taweret as a composite figure with the head of a hippopotamus and the body of a pregnant woman, shown in a striding pose with her left leg advanced and arms straight at her sides, fists clenched. Taweret, also known as Thoueris, Tauret, Apet, or Opet, served as a protective deity for mothers and children, ensuring safe childbirth and safeguarding the family. Her presence was often invoked in amulets and rituals to promote health and well-being, and this example features a suspension loop on the head for wearing or tucking into mummy wrappings, aiding in the deceased's "rebirth." The stunning turquoise glaze symbolizes the rejuvenating power of the Nile River. Size: 0.59" L x 0.58" W x 1.9" H (1.5 cm x 1.5 cm x 4.8 cm)
