Carved Oak Bench in Gothic Revival Style
This bench is carved oak in gothic revival style. It has four panels in the back, each of which bears an armed and armored figure. These run from gothic full plate to 17th century Cavalier. The bench has scrolled arms. There are rails on the legs.
Source: The full provenance of this bench is unknown, but it was bought at auction from the estate of Dr. A.W. McAlester, who was descended on his mother's side from Dr. Henry Clay, M.D. of Bourbon County, KY. Dr. Henry Clay was a first cousin of Green Clay, father of Cassius Clay, and John Clay, father of Henry Clay the statesman. This piece may have been owned by a Clay ancestor of Dr. Henry Clay.
Condition: Fair. The bench is largely structurally sound with expected overall wear but the arms are loose and may detach if handled much.
It measures 73" w by 21 1/2" d by 41 1/2" h.

"Deaccessioned property from the Ashland Estate being sold by the Henry Clay Memorial Foundation with proceeds to be deposited to the Ashland Acquisition Fund for further Acquisitions and direct care of collections."
