McLean stating "Your resignation has been accepted by the President of the United States, to take effect the 20th day of April, 1865." NATHANIEL C. McLEAN, (1815-1905), Union Army Brigadier General; colonel of the 75th Ohio Infantry in Sept., 1861, and led that regiment in Western Virginia; he commanded a brigade at the Battle of Cross Keys on June 8, 1862; his Brigade's heroic defense of Chinn's Ridge at the Second Battle of Bull Run saved the Union Army of Virginia from disaster, and he was promoted to Brigadier General on Nov. 29, 1862; McLean commanded a Brigade in the XI Corps, Army of the Potomac, at the Battle of Chancellorsville; Commanded Brigades in the Atlanta & Carolina Campaigns under General Sherman.
April 21, 1865-Dated One Week After President Abraham Lincoln's Assassination on April 15th, this Partially-Printed Letter received from the Adjutant General's Office, officially advising that Brigadier General Nathaniel C. McLean's request of Resignation has been Accepted by the President, with an acknowledgement Autograph Note Signed, "N. C. McLean, Brig. Genl.", handwritten in rich brown ink on the reverse. Also, accompanied by the original Postally Used Transmittal Cover, Choice Very Fine. This April 21, 1865 Letter was Postmarked on April 22 (18)65" in an Official Envelope is from the Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D.C., is Signed by "S. F. Chalfin" as Assistant Adjutant General, addressed to "Brig. Genl N. C. McLean, U.S. Volunteers 2nd Div. 23rd Army Corps Mosley Hall, Cin. O.", advising him that:
"Your resignation has been accepted by the President of the United States, to take effect the 20th day of April, 1865".
This fully completed and issued letter measures 5" x 7.75" being on white wove period paper partially printed in black. On the blank reverse of this letter is an Autograph Note / Docket Signed by General McLean, which reads in full:
"Rec'd the within acceptance of my resignation on May 22nd 1865 at Cincinnati Ohio. --- (Signed) N.C. McLean, Brig. Genl."
This Letter is accompanied by its original printed envelope, "Adjutant General's Office, Official Business" printed at top right, with stamped facsimile frank signature of Samuel Breck, Asst. Adjutant General. Transmittal Postal Cover with Stamped "Apr. 22, 1865 WASHINGTON D.C. / FREE" double-circle Postmark, and bold blue "DUE 3 cts." Handstamp, and with Addressed to "Brig. Genl. N.C. McLean, U.S. Volunteers, 2d Div., 23d Army Corps, Mosely Hall, N.C.", and forwarded to Cincinnati, Ohio. (2 items)

NATHANIEL C. McLEAN (1815-1905) was the son of U.S. Supreme Court Justice, John McLean. An attorney in Cincinnati before the Civil War, Nathaniel was commissioned Colonel of the 75th Ohio Infantry in Sept., 1861, and led that regiment in Western Virginia; he commanded a brigade at the Battle of Cross Keys on June 8, 1862.
His Brigade's heroic defense of Chinn's Ridge at the Second Battle of Bull run saved the Union Army of Virginia from disaster, and he was promoted to Brigadier General on Nov. 29, 1862; McLean commanded a Brigade in the XI Corps, Army of the Potomac, at the Battle of Chancellorsville; Commanded Brigades in the Atlanta & Carolina Campaigns under General Sherman. As per this Letter, he was given official notice that his previously requested resignation from the Union Army was accepted on April 20, 1865. Afterwards, McLean returned to his law practice in Cincinnati.
