This remarkable statue, standing 4 feet tall is a masterful representation of Cian Yu, the legendary Chinese general deified as a god of war, loyalty, and righteousness. Carved from solid hardwood and dating to the Ming or early Qing dynasty (14th-18th centuries), it exemplifies the extraordinary craftsmanship of the era. The statue retains much of its original polychrome finish, enhanced with silver and gold leaf accents that imbue it with a majestic and reverent presence. Guan Yu, often depicted in a commanding pose with his signature long beard and stern expression, is revered in Chinese culture as a symbol of honor and integrity. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, such statues were commonly placed in temples, shrines, or homes to serve as protective figures or to inspire devotion. The intricate detailing and use of precious materials suggest that this piece was created for a significant patron or a place of great importance. The current example not only reflects the artistic sensibilities of its time but also carries with it the cultural and historical gravitas of one of China's most enduring icons. The preservation of its polychrome finish, particularly the delicate application of gold and silver leaf, adds to its rarity and value. Provenance: private collection. Condition: Minor wear consistent with age, with areas of polychrome and gilding intact. Some natural cracks in the wood, as expected for a piece of this age. Weight approx 84 lbs.
