Egypt, New Kingdom to Third Intermediate Period, 18th to 25th Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 664 BCE. A hand-carved alabaster ushabti figure standing in a mummiform pose with arms crossed atop the chest. The head is adorned with the classic tripartite wig, featuring lappets that drape down to the chest. The stone exhibits beautiful wavy graining, which illuminates these natural details when backlit. The ancient Egyptians believed that after death, their spirits would work in the "Field of Reeds" ruled by Osiris, the god of the underworld. This involved agricultural labor, a requirement for all members of society, from workers to pharaohs. To alleviate or assist with this toil, ushabti figures were created and placed in tombs to work on behalf of the deceased in the afterlife. Size: 3" L x 0.9" W (7.6 cm x 2.3 cm)

Provenance: private R.D. collection, Long Beach, California, USA collection, acquired from an Egyptian antiquities dealer, Cairo, Egypt, in the late 1990s
