AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA WOODEN CANTEEN, cheesebox form of stave construction with two finger-lapped wooden securing bands, inset and raised rectangular-framed wooden bunghole with smooth interior and a period stamped "IR" to one corner and carved same into the opposite corner, historical but later wooden lug added to each outer edge securing a bentwood swing handle. The canteen retains an outstanding original dry red-painted surface. Fourth quarter 18th century. 6 1/2" W, 10" D.

    Condition:
  • Very good as-found condition, very minor edge losses to bands, tacks added at lap joints to secure the handle lugs, one causing a short crack, crack to one swing handle terminal.
