(AMERICAN INDIANS.) Cabinet card of the Apache scout Nantaje, who was awarded the Medal of Honor. Albumen print, 5½ x 3¾ inches, on photographer's mount with inked stamp on verso, numbered in the negative 488; minimal wear. Tucson, AZ: Buehman & Hartwell, circa 1880

    Notes:
  • In 1872, Nantaje (or Nantahe) helped guide the United States Cavalry to an Arizona cave which served as a hideout for a band of Yavapai. During the battle, 76 of the Yavapai were killed. Nantaje also won praise for rescuing a Yavapai boy who had been caught in the crossfire. He and his fellow scouts were awarded the Medal of Honor three years later. He is here posed with a rifle, revolver, and hunting knife.
