Western Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A lovely hand-carved wooden spoon known as an okwa nzu, featuring a bifurcated handle surmounted by a finial in the form of a face, all painted in natural black, white, and red pigments. Encompassed by an undulating border, the scoop is adorned with a chalky white pigment, while the detailed head is crowned by a crested coiffure and large side buns encompassing each ear. The visage features arched brows, slender eyes, a triangular nose, and full, closed lips, all capped by a metal suspension loop allowing it to be hung for display or storage. Size: 14.4" L x 5.5" W (36.6 cm x 14 cm)

This object, while referred to as a spoon due to its handle resembling that function, is actually designed to lie flat and serves as a dish for holding chalk. In Igbo culture, both the kola nut and chalk hold significant roles in hospitality rituals. These items facilitate better communication not only among people but also between individuals and deities. As a result, the Igbo have created special containers to store kola nuts and chalk. Chalk, particularly its white color, symbolizes purity, beauty, and sanctity. Pregnant women often rub chalk on their bellies, and devotees use cones of white chalk to honor gods and ancestors at their altars. During rituals or formal occasions, participants traditionally begin the event by passing around a piece of chalk, which is then used to mark the ground or their bodies.
