More About This Item

Item Overview

Description: According to the factory letter, this rifle was shipped as follows: Rifle, 38 caliber, 28" octagon barrel, set trigger, fancy stock, and case hardened. Received in the warehouse on Sept. 23, 1884, shipped from warehouse on Sept. 24, 1884, order no. 15437. Additional factory information was found by well known historian James Gordon during his research for his definitive set of Winchester 1873 Books. This supporting information came from hands on evidence, work orders and Winchester Museum ledgers. This rifle is listed in his inventory by serial number as: Rifle, 38 caliber, DW (for deluxe wood), IN (for special barrel length), and under special notes is written "Nighthawk". Nighthawk, also known as Dr. Frank Powell, was a long time partner and friend of William F. Cody and travelled with his Wild West Show. In particular, the show in England in 1887 for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The life of Frank Powell is well documented in numerous books and his association with William F. Cody is also well known. As they were well known for giving each other souvenirs and gifts, it is apparent that this rifle was ordered by Dr. Powell to present to Cody as a gift, as evidenced by the finely engraved "W.F. Cody" on left side plate. The inside tang is stamped with Triple X for the fantastic deluxe wood. Which of particular note, as a highly unusual special feature, they turned the wood grain in reverse, showing off its incredible burl walnut grain. As to present condition, the barrel and magazine tube are an untouched even brown-blue smooth patina, with sharp legends, and sporting sights. The frame, lever, and hammer have turned to a soft patina and nickeling. The lifter is unpolished and retains a deep rich aged brass tone. The loading gate remains showing 40-50% of its blue finish. Forend wood is excellent with a minor 1/8" chip at left front. Buttstock is excellent, well-fitting, with slight sliver at lower tang. In perfect working order, with strong rifling. It is a well known fact that Buffalo Bill loved the 73' rifle as well as the 38-40 cartridge, and as you will see in many of his photographs, rifles used by him were not the usual fancy engraved models, and are more often working examples. With volumes of writings about the importance of both William F. Cody and Dr. "Nighthawk" Powell around the world, this is an extraordinary opportunity to obtain a Winchester Model 1873 special order rifle that was once owned by the legendary Western superstar Buffalo Bill Cody, as presented to him by the equally famous Dr. Frank "Nighthawk" Powell.
