This lot features a Early and Rare Winchester Model 1886 .45-90 Octagon Rifle. The rifle features a 26" octagon barrel, buckhorn sights, walnut stock, full length magazine, and blue'd finish. The Winchester Model 1886 was a lever-action repeating rifle designed by John Browning to handle some of the more powerful cartridges of the period. Originally chambered in .45-70, .45-90 WCF and .40-82 WCF, it was later offered in a half dozen other large cartridges, including the .50-110 Winchester. Despite being originally designed for use with black powder, the action was strong enough to make the jump to smokeless powder with only minor modifications. A scarce western big game chambering in the Model 1886, the .45-90 takes the longest case (2.4” as opposed to 2.1” for the .45-70 family of cartridges) that will fit in the stout Browning designed 1886 action. Few surviving examples remain today in this caliber. Overall metal shows a lovely aged blue patina yet retains excellent Winchester markings on the correct 26” barrel as well as on the upper tang. The butt stock and forearm display very tight wood to metal fit. The 1886 in .45-90 chambering was not only popular in the American West, but was also used in India to hunt tigers. This rifle came out of an old Montana estate. This rifle shows good condition, with some handling marks and signs of use. The mechanics are strong and tight. The bore is shiny with strong rifle showing very slight pitting. This rifle was manufactured in 1891. It is a antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required. The serial number is 60768.
