Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A set of 2 cast-bronze artifacts: a head and an eagle. The eagle presents with wings folded against the back and head raised; feathers are etched across the body. The larger piece is a human head and neck line bearing a suspension loop atop the coiffure, perhaps used as a pendant or a merchant's weight. Size of largest (head): 0.61" W x 1.33" H (1.5 cm x 3.4 cm)

Provenance: private Charlotte, North Carolina, USA collection; ex-Joel Malter collection, prior to 2004

    Condition:
  • Both artifacts with light abrasions and nicks, softening to some finer details, and light earthen deposits, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout. Wire strung through suspension loop atop head is modern.
