1859 Declaration Independence Plaque by Samuel H. Black An Extremely Rare Large First Seen, Likely Unique, Major Variant "Negative Plate" Production Process Type
(DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE - Dated 1859). The original "Negative Plate" Production Process Embossed Copper Metal Plaque, with the obverse of C. C. Wright's "Declaration of Independence" medal at center, elegantly engraved after the famous John Trumbull Painting of the occasion, by Samuel H. Black.
1859-Dated, "Declaration of Independence" an Exceedingly Rare, highly ornate, likely Unique, original "Negative Plate" of the Embossed Copper Metal Plaque, produced by Samuel H. Black, measuring about 9.5" x 11.5", Choice Near New. This Samuel H. Black Electrotype Copper Plaque displays a central scene of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence, dated below: "July 4th, 1776". Samuel H. Black, was a prominent New York City electrotyper in the mid-19th century (active 1858-65). This exceptional design is the first of its type we have encountered and may have been produced as a prototype design. Both the top and bottom extended points each have a tiny hole, meant for a brad/nail to adhere this design to a backing, likely for use in Black's production process. This Plaque is large in size with irregular outer borders, accommodating ornate outer edge designs. Within the thick outer border are 16 individual possibly Greek Mythological Figures. This design remains unframed, the copper is not gilt, with subtle designs, as compared to the other design version being offered as a separate lot, with far more distinct sharper decorative border designs, fully Gilt and offered framed. Below the text of the Declaration of Independence and Signatures of all Signers in facsimile, there appears Black's copyright legend in minuscule text reading: "ENTERED ACCORDING TO ACT OF CONGRESS, IN THE YEAR 1859 BY S.H. BLACK IN THE CLERK'S OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT COURT OF THE UNITED STATES FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK." There is a very minor metal edge pull to the top center of the outer decorative border, at 12 o'clock, yet the design is fully intact, otherwise it appears perfect, as made. Also included in this lot is an unframed 6" x 8" Photograph portrait of a man, seemingly 19th century, that likely served as backing for the plaque at some point. This cataloger believes that the other current framed and gilt lot offered is "positive plate", created from this uncoated metal "reverse plate" essential for the production of a salable final product. Likely Unique.
