 1962 Chevrolet Impala 409 4-Speed Convertible

Few automobiles capture the style, presence and excitement of early-1960s America quite like the Chevrolet Impala. With its long, low profile, extensive brightwork and unmistakable styling, the 1962 Impala remains one of Chevrolet’s most recognizable designs.

This striking example combines that iconic convertible body style with Chevrolet’s legendary 409-cubic-inch W-series V8, a 4-speed manual transmission, red bucket-seat interior, black vinyl convertible top and numerous Super Sport appointments. The 409 has also been thoughtfully upgraded with modern electronic fuel injection and ignition components intended to make this classic Chevrolet more enjoyable on the road.

Finished today in a dramatic black-over-red color combination, this Impala delivers the appearance, sound and experience enthusiasts associate with Chevrolet’s high-performance full-size cars of the early 1960s.

Vehicle Identification & Factory Configuration

VIN: 21867B186887

The VIN identifies the car as a 1962 Chevrolet Impala V8 2-door convertible assembled in Baltimore, Maryland. Chevrolet's 1962 identification information confirms 1867 as the V8 Impala Convertible body style and B as the Baltimore assembly plant. The convertible was one of the two Impala body styles on which the Super Sport package was available.

The Fisher Body tag provides additional information regarding its original configuration:

STYLE 62-1867 – 1962 Impala V8 Convertible
TRIM 886 – Red vinyl convertible interior
PAINT 936 – Ermine White

The car has since been refinished in its current black exterior and is presently equipped with a red bucket-seat interior and Super Sport-style appointments.

Chevrolet's 1962 color and trim documentation identifies Trim 886 as the standard red Impala Convertible interior, while Trim 879 was the red bucket-seat interior option.

Accordingly, although this automobile contains numerous features associated with the Super Sport package, factory Super Sport status has not been conclusively authenticated and is not represented as such by the auction company.

The Legendary Chevrolet 409

At the heart of the car is a genuine Chevrolet 409-cubic-inch W-series V8 built around a 3788068 casting block, a casting associated with 1962 passenger-car 409 applications.

Photographs supplied with the vehicle also document 3814690 high-performance cylinder heads, along with the raised “X” block marking, CFD casting identification and Armasteel main-bearing caps.

These major engine components are consistent with Chevrolet's high-performance 409 hardware of the period.

Rebuilt for Performance & Drivability

Owner-supplied documentation describes substantial work performed to the 409 with an emphasis on performance, strength and improved drivability.

The engine was reportedly fitted with a custom-ground Competition Cams hydraulic roller camshaft, designed to provide strong performance characteristics while eliminating the periodic valve-lash adjustments associated with a traditional solid-lifter arrangement.

Documentation also describes a true-roller timing set and extensive use of ARP fasteners, including hardware for the cylinder heads, crankshaft mains, connecting rods, camshaft, flywheel/clutch and harmonic balancer.

Historical engine-build notes further state that recognized 409 specialist Jack Gibbs performed sleeving work on the block and assisted with sourcing period-appropriate engine components during the build.

These modifications are not represented as factory-original equipment; rather, they reflect an engine build intended to combine the character of Chevrolet's classic W-series 409 with greater durability and usability.

Electronic Fuel Injection

The 409 is presently equipped with Holley Sniper electronic fuel injection, providing a modern approach to fuel delivery and improved everyday drivability.

The system is complemented by a Holley Sniper EFI HyperSpark electronic ignition system and Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum intake manifold. The EFI installation also incorporates an external adjustable fuel-pressure regulator, pressure gauge, braided fuel plumbing and AN-style fittings.

According to the owner, components from the engine's previous dual-four-barrel configuration have been retained and will accompany the car, providing the next owner with the opportunity to return the engine to a more traditional dual-quad appearance if desired. Prospective bidders should review the accompanying photographs and component inventory to determine exactly which induction components are included.

Power is transferred through a 4-speed manual transmission, giving this full-size Chevrolet the driver-focused character that made the high-performance 409 Impalas such memorable automobiles.

Super Sport Appointments

The Impala is presently equipped with numerous distinctive features associated with Chevrolet's 1962 Super Sport package, including front bucket seats, short center console, passenger-side dashboard assist bar, engine-turned trim, SS identification and Super Sport-style exterior appointments.

These are significant because Chevrolet's RPO 240 Super Sport package included bucket seats, front console, passenger assist bar, special wheel covers, side molding inserts, Super Sport emblems and, on 4-speed cars, a special console plate.

However, individual SS components can be added to a standard Impala, and Chevrolet specialists specifically note that trim codes are an important method of distinguishing a 1962 SS because the Super Sport received its own bucket-seat/all-vinyl trim codes.

Because this vehicle presently possesses numerous characteristic SS features while its Fisher Body tag carries Trim Code 886 rather than the documented red SS/bucket-seat code 879, Worley Auctioneers is not representing the vehicle as a conclusively authenticated factory Super Sport.

Prospective bidders are encouraged to inspect the car, Fisher Body tag, mounting and installation of the SS components and all accompanying documentation and make their own determination regarding its original factory configuration.

Exterior & Interior

The Impala is currently finished in black over a striking red vinyl bucket-seat interior, complemented by a black vinyl convertible top.

The Fisher Body tag identifies Paint Code 936 – Ermine White, establishing that the body has been refinished from its original exterior color.

The current red interior incorporates bucket seats, center console, passenger-side assist bar and other SS-style appointments, creating the sporting cockpit associated with Chevrolet's early Super Sport era.

Extensive chrome and brightwork, Impala identification, SS-style details, full wheel covers and narrow whitewall tires complete the period presentation.

With the top lowered, the combination of the long Impala body, black finish and contrasting red interior gives this Chevrolet tremendous presence.

Paint Condition Note

The black finish presents attractively overall. The vehicle recently received professional detailing and paint correction. Following that service, some localized haziness/cloudiness became noticeable on portions of the hood and trunk lid when viewed under certain lighting conditions and viewing angles.

Minor surface irregularities can also be detected primarily by touch. These areas are subtle under normal viewing conditions but are specifically disclosed for bidder awareness and transparency.

Prospective bidders are encouraged to personally inspect the vehicle and carefully review all photographs prior to bidding.

Important Identification & Condition Disclosure

This vehicle is not represented as numbers matching. Historical documentation supplied with the vehicle records engine stamping B272998 T0713QB; the partial VIN contained in that historical record does not correspond with vehicle VIN 21867B186887, and the engine identification pad presently appears blank.

The vehicle is equipped with numerous features associated with Chevrolet's 1962 Super Sport package. However, Chevrolet documentation identifies 879 as the red bucket-seat convertible trim code, while this vehicle's Fisher Body tag displays 886, corresponding with the standard red Impala Convertible interior. Accordingly, factory Super Sport status has not been conclusively authenticated and is not represented as such by Worley Auctioneers.

Historical restoration, engine-build and component information is based in part upon documentation, photographs and representations supplied by the owner and third parties. Prospective bidders are encouraged to perform their own inspection and due diligence regarding identification numbers, casting numbers, component originality, factory configuration and condition.
