Abraham Palatnik (1928- 2020) Artemis Collection Lucite Leopard Sculpture, Brazilian Op Art, 1970s Cast acrylic (Lucite) sculpture depicting a reclining leopard with Palatnik's signature geometric optical patterning in black and amber tones. One of a series of stylized animal forms designed by the pioneering Brazilian kinetic and Op Art artist.  Dimensions: 9 in. W × 5 in. H × 1.25 in. D. Condition: Minor chip to one ear; otherwise in very good overall condition with light wear consistent with age.

Lot: 4 - MCM Royal Copenhagen Tenera Fajance Shaker Set by Inge-Lise Kofoed

The set includes a tall sugar sprinkler/shaker and four smaller salt or pepper shakers, featuring a distinct blue and white faience ceramic with a detailed pattern band. The uppers are fashioned from a dark and contrasting light blue-grey silk fabric decorated with subtle floral embroidery work along the borders. Lot: 43 - Japanese Meiji Okimono Statue of a Graceful Young Woman Bijin

Japanese okimono from the Meiji period (1868-1912) depicting a woman holding a parasol. Such figures, known as bijin or geisha, were popular decorative carvings during this era. The figure is beautifully carved wearing a traditional flowing kimono secured with an obi. She is depicted standing on a rustic, naturalistic base while wearing geta sandals. In one hand, she holds an intricately detailed open parasol, and in the other, a delicate floral arrangement. A vintage Chinese cloisonne enamel bowl by Robert Kuo, produced for his Kuo’s China Cloison studio. The heavy copper-form body features intricately detailed hand-laid wire work filled with vibrant polychrome enamels, depicting dense scrolling floral tendrils, butterflies, and geometric borders. Raised on a carved dark wood presentation stand. 14.5 inches W x 6 H, on stand measures 9.5 inches H. Before achieving worldwide acclaim for high-end luxury furniture, Robert Kuo established the Kuo's China Cloison studio in Beverly Hills, California, after emigrating from Taiwan in 1973.

Antique Chinese Export Sterling Silver Dragon Box marked Sterling C.J. and Co. The hinged cover and exterior walls are decorated in repousse and hand-chased relief work, featuring a four-clawed dragon dynamically swirling amidst stippled wind clouds with interior wood lining.  C.J. and Co. was a well-known silversmith firm operating out of the Hong Kong or Shanghai regions around the turn of the 20th century (circa 1900). They specialized in producing high-quality export silverware tailored specifically for Western markets. Measuring 6 inches W x 3.25 deep x 1.5 H. Total weight 371.7 grams.

A complete, deluxe portable Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) set housed in a faux-leather or leatherette presentation briefcase. The set features a complete collection of drum-shaped marble gaming pieces deeply incised with traditional Chinese characters in contrasting gold and silver-toned fills. The interior features a molded plush lining with dedicated recessed slots to securely protect each individual piece during transport. The hinged, folding top lid conveniently unfolds to serve as the decorated grid playing board. Outfitted with dual brass-toned snap latches and a sturdy composite carrying handle. Lot: 75 - Antique Japanese Ink on Paper, Ukiyoe of Anti-Christian Manifest

Antique Japanese Ink on Paper, calligraphy from the Shogunate era detailing the persecution of Christians in Japan c. 1750.  Christianity in Edo Japan underwent a dramatic shift from rapid growth to total suppression. What began as a thriving faith with over 300,000 converts was outlawed in the early 1600s, driving adherents underground to survive brutal persecution. The Tokugawa Shogunate viewed the exclusive nature of the Christian faith as a threat to their political authority and national unity. This led to the creation of the Kirishitan (the Japanese term for Catholics) and a bloody legacy that defined the era. The shogunate officially banned the propagation of Christianity, ordered the destruction of churches, and forced foreign missionaries to leave. The crackdown escalated over the decades. Thousands of believers were tortured or executed, famously including the 50 foreign and domestic Catholics burned at the stake during the Great Martyrdom of Edo. A peasant uprising comprised largely of persecuted Christians was brutally crushed by government forces. This event solidified Japan's isolationist sakoku policy, permanently severing ties with most of the Western world. The Kakure Kirishitan (Hidden Christians) to avoid extermination, were forced to publicly renounce their faith-often by participating in mandatory Buddhist and Shinto rituals or stepping on copper plaques of Jesus and Mary. In secret, they practiced as Kakure Kirishitan. Measuring 13 inches H x 17.5 W. Some tears to paper, as shown.

Antique Japanese Shogunal Proclamation Road Sign, served as the official public edict boards of the Tokugawa Shogunate and local han-lords from the late Nara period through the Edo period, lasting until the early Meiji period placed along highways to inform the citizens of a region. The small canopy or roof built over the top edge was standard design functionality. It protected the handwritten ink from washing away under rain and weathering while out on the open road. A matching triptych of three antique Japanese portrait paintings (ita-e), executed in ink and vibrant mineral pigments on paper, likely dating to the mid-to-late Edo Period. This cohesive set features three elite historical court nobles (kugyo) from the celebrated Thirty-Six Immortal Poets (Sanjurokkasen) anthology. Each figure is elegantly dressed in formal ceremonial court attire (sokutai) and seated atop decorated ritual mats with wave motif (seigaiha) borders. Lot: 84 - Antique Japanese Samurai Silk, Cotton and Iron Plated Chest Armour

Elegant finely crafted chest protector, for samurai of high rank, Edo period. These were used out of battlefield, for daily protection, while projecting social status symbol. The silk and cotton fabrics hide small hexagonal iron pieces that protects from stabbing. Garment measures 17 inches W x 19 H, stand measures 7 W x 21 inches H. Some staining, discolouration and small holes to fabric lining. 

Lot: 85 - Japanese Muromachi Period Samurai Katana Sukesada

Very beautiful same design Shakudo Nanako koshirae signed Osafune Sukesada Muromachi period katana. The katana was made in the Tenbun era (july 1532 to October 1555) during the turbulent Sengoku period. Osafune Sukesada refers to a famous lineage of swordsmiths from the Osafune school in Bizen province, active during the late Muromachi and Sengoku periods(15th and 16th centuries). The blade is 24.5 inches long and in excellent, near-mint condition with a Bo-hi, or fuller, a longitudinal groove carved into the flat of a blade. The sword is fully 34 inches L. Shakudo Nanako refers to a traditional Japanese metalwork technique combining a dark copper-gold alloy (Shakudo) with a distinctive stippled background texture (Nanako). This sword is a vivid example of this technique. The fuchi, kashira, and the whole saya shows this traditional metalwork throughout. The tsuka is also in very fine condition with intact sharkskin and very tight silk-cord wrap. A very fine, rare sword from the Muromachi period. Signed, no papers, with silk bag. Stand is not included.

Lot: 86 - Edo period Japanese Samurai Wakizashi Sword

The blade is Edo period, in good polished condition with a visible temper line, and fitted with a silver Habaki. The tang has one pierce and shows appropriate age. It is Mumei, or unsigned. The sword features a museum quality koshirae, a complete, matching set of fittings with an insect motif throughout, dragonflies on the kashira, menuki , and tsuba; dragonflies and a praying mantis on the fuchi. The Kozuka/kogatana is also decorated with insects. The tsuka retains its original sharkskin and leather wrap. The saya is beautifully decorated with finely detailed lacquer work. Blade length is 18 inches with a 13 inches cutting edge. Overall with saya 24 inches. Unsigned, no papers, with silk bag. Stand not included.

Lot: 87 - Bizen Osafune Kamakura Yoshikage Naginata Blade In Shirasaya

The son of the great swordsmith Kagemitsu, Yoshikage was one of the famous swordsmiths of the 14th century. He specialized in naginatas, powerful swords like this one. The shirasaya, which authenticates the blade, is signed by Tanobe Sensei, one of the greatest sword experts in history, with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certification. The Yoshikage swordsmiths of the Bizen Osafune school were active during the late Kamakura and early Muromachi periods (1280-1370). Their blades were highly regarded for their distinctive steel patterns (hada) and temper lines (hamon), influenced by the prestigious Soshu school. Due to the age of these blades, authentic examples are prized museum pieces. Many possess preservation (Hozon) or high-level (Tokubetsu Hozon) certificates issued by the NBTHK (Japanese Art Sword Preservation Society).  Naginatas, a type of halberd, are ancient weapons that appeared around 1100. They are swords measuring 30 to 60 cm, mounted on shafts that can reach 2.7 meters in length. Warrior monks were specialists in their use, as evidenced by the numerous battles of Benkei, the most famous among them. They were particularly effective at breaking through the charge of horses. With the advent of firearms in 1543, they disappeared from the battlefield, but strangely enough, they became a symbol of the social status of female samurai. The naginata would now be part of a young woman's dowry. Its length compensated for the difference in size, weight, and strength between men and women, allowing them to defend their home when their husbands were at war. Shirasaya measures 27 inches L, blade measures 19.25 inches, cutting edge measures 18.25 inches L. Stand not included in lot.

Lot: 88 - Japanese Mantetsu Military Sword c. WW2 Made From Railway Tracks

An historically important military sword. In 1937, the Japanese war effort required the mass production of military swords, as they represented the samurai tradition that the Imperial Army wished to instill in its soldiers. In occupied Manchuria (Manchukuo), a researcher, Dr. Kusaha Kasuharu, developed a revolutionary steelmaking process that made it possible to create swords from the metal of the Dairen Railway Company's tracks. The quality was so high that experts mistook the prototype for a sword by the great 16th-century master swordsmith, Tadayoshi. All 7,000 workers at the Mantetsu factory, founded in 1906, were required to pay their respects at a Shinto shrine before beginning their work, to imbue the swords with the divine power of the kami. Mantetsu swords bear the inscription on their silk: To develop the soul of Asia, Mantetsu undertook this work with respect. Sword measures 38 inches L, blade measures 27.25 inches with cutting edge measuring 26 inches L.

Lot: 89 - Edo Period Japanese Samurai Long Katana Kunikane in Shirasaya

Edo Kanbun era (April 1661 to September 1673) long katana in shirasaya. Fujiwara Kunikane refers to a famous lineage of Japanese swordsmiths from the Sendai domain in Oahu, Rikuzen province, spanning 13 generations from the early Edo period (1603-1700) onward. The blade is 28 inches long, and signed Yamashiro Daizyou Fujiwara Kunikane. It is a very healthy and beautiful blade, with some little rust and blemishes. Habaki is wood. It has also a Kikou Mon, named after the chrysanthemum, a symbol of Imperial Japan, a Mon that represents majesty and tradition. The shirasaya is in good condition. Signed and dated Kanbun era, no papers, comes with a silk bag. Shirasaya measures 38.5 inches L. No stand is included with this lot.

Lot: 90 - Imperial Japanese WWII Officer’s Shin-Gunto Sword with Scabbard

World War II-period Japanese Imperial Army Officer's Shin-Gunto sword. The curved steel blade features a traditional hand-wrapped cord handle over ray skin, fitted with standard brass military tsuba (handguard) and matching metal accents. Includes its matching military-issue scabbard equipped with a single suspension mount for field use, an attached lanyard tassel. Sword measures 39.5 inches L, blade measures 27.5 inches L, cutting edge measures 26 inches L.

Lot: 91 - The Type 32 Japanese Sword (Sanjuni-nen-shiki gunto)

This sword is a standardized military saber introduced by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1889. Heavily influenced by European cavalry sabers, it featured a Western-style, single-hand hilt combined with a traditional, factory-made, katana-style blade profile.  Produced at the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal until 1936, the swords saw service through the Russo-Japanese War, WWI, and WWII.  This sword features a robust all-steel scabbard and a thumb-depressed locking mechanism that clicks the sword securely in place. Original specimens are highly collectible historical artifacts. Included is a photo of the owner of the sword, in WW2.  Sword measures 36.75 inches L, blade measures 30.5 inches L, serial number on blade, 108156.

Saigo Takamori is an important figure of samurai history, involved in the transition from medieval to modern Japan; he is the true historical last samurai, as illustrated in the Last Samurai movie. This set includes: - Splendid military uniform of the new Meiji japanese reform of 1870s, reflecting the French influence, by French military consultants, such as Jules Brunet, the true historical military officer that formed the new Japanese national army, at the end of the samurai period. Banksy (British, b. 1974 ) Manner of, Documented Belfast Painter Rat Spray Paint Street Sign, c. 2014. Spray paint on a Northern Irish metal road sign, the reverse bearing the manufacturer's label for PWS (PWS Signs), dated November 2008. The work depicts a rat with paint can and brush, a motif related in composition to the recurring Painter Rat imagery associated with Banksy's street practice. Provenance: Acquired directly from Neil Kerr, curator of the BREED exhibition held at The National Grande Cafe, Belfast, in November 2014. According to information provided by Neil Kerr at the time of acquisition, the present work formed part of a series of rat-themed street works associated with the promotion of the BREED exhibition, which featured works by Banksy alongside those of other prominent street artists. The appearance of rat imagery throughout Belfast immediately preceding the exhibition was documented contemporaneously by the Belfast Telegraph in its November 3, 2014 article, Is Banksy in Belfast? Signature rats start popping up ahead of Breed exhibition. The underlying road sign bears its original PWS manufacturer's label dated November 2008, providing a physical Northern Irish connection to the support. Purchased by a Montreal collector circa 2016 and retained in the collection since that time. Jean Alexandre Coraboeuf (French, 1870-1947) Portrait of a Gentleman, circa 1895-1905, Oil on canvas laid down on panel, 16 inches H x 12 W. Unsigned but presented as found with an accompanying drawing with inscription attributing it to the artist, 13 x 10 inches. The sitter, depicted with a distinctive imperial beard and direct gaze, is rendered with exceptional sensitivity and naturalism, reflecting the accomplished portrait practice for which Coraboeuf became known during the Belle Epoque. As the pieces are unsigned, the painting and drawing are sold as manner of.  Catalog Note: Jean Alexandre Coraboeuf studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Leon Gerome and Edouard Detaille before winning the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1898. A unique small lithograph on paper showing an angel playing a guitar, it would appear that the lithograph was a greeting paper as also marked Infiniti Auguri Per Il Natale 59 E Per L'Anno 1960 Da Eve E Cloni Gioia Felicita Pace Salute, which translates to English as Infinite best wishes for Christmas 1959 and for the year 1960 from Eve and Cloni Joy Happiness Peace Health, the image is in the modernist Transvanguardia (Neo-expressionism) style though interestingly created about a decade before the start of the movement in Italy in the 1970's. The artist or identify of Eve and Cloni has not been discovered. Provenance - from the Estate of the late artist Allan Harrison, Montreal, Quebec. Frame measures 9.5 inches H x 6 W.

Set of etchings by Herbert Raine, an English-born architect who immigrated to Montreal in 1907 and became a celebrated printmaker and member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA). The Fisher Folk at Kamouraska depicts a group of local French-Canadian villagers gathering along the St. Lawrence River shoreline in the historic, picturesque region of Kamouraska, Quebec and Rest from Labour, Portuguese Fishermen captures a candid, atmospheric moment of Portuguese fishermen taking a break on the docks next to their vessels. The latter is inscribed by the artist as a gift. Both signed in pencil lower right, titled lower left. Larger measures 11.5 inches H x 13 W, smaller measures 9.75 x 10.75 inches, framed.

Luis Eduardo de la Rocha (Spain - France, 1886-1968), a very rare series of artist proof lithographs of charcoal sketches of the Spanish Revolution of 1936, total of 9 lithographs on arches paper, all signed in pencil lower right by the artist and titled in Spanish and noted in French artist's proof (epreuve d'artiste) on the lower left, set in a paper portfolio marked Revolution Espangole and signed by the artist. Smallest lithograph measures 10 x 13 inches, largest measures 17.25 inches x 13. Folio measures 18 inches x 13.  Luis de la Rocha was born in Madrid but mainly lived and worked in France and supported the anti-fascist cause during the revolution, this graphic series of charcoal sketches detailing the horrors of the Spanish Revolution are little known and very rare, how many lithograph sets were made and the location of the originals is unknown.  Provenance - a late distinguished Canadian collector.

Every piece is executed using the highly specialized scavo (textured / excavation) technique. The centrepiece features a clean modernist pedestal form supporting a shallow, wide lip with an assortment of ten life-sized scavo glass fruits, including pears, apples, and related flora, detailed with attached stems and clear glass leaves attributed to prominent Murano studios such as Gino Cenedese or Alfredo Barbini. Decorated with hand-painted freshwater fish (like pike and carp) resting in underwater habitats filled with water lilies and aquatic grasses. The scalloped rims are accented with rich gilding and embossed detailing. Platter measures 23 inches L x 9 W x 2 H, gravy boat measures 9 inches L x 5 W x 4 H. Plates measure 8.25 inches diameter. Marked on underside under glaze, impressed marks. Two plates have chips.

The sculpture rests securely upon its original, matching turned alabaster column pedestal, which is accented by classic carved moldings and a fluted, decorative base. Eagles measuring 22 in. H x 26 in. W, column measures 37 in. H x 17 W, total height 59 inches. The eagles are removable from the base, which has a pivoting top.

A late 19th-century French Napoleon III period "Oeil de Boeuf" (Bull's Eye) or vineyard-style square wall clock. The square, ebonized wood case features an elaborately contoured profile accented with delicate, intricately scrolled brass foliate and floral marquetry inlays inspired by the traditional Boulle style. At the center is a beautifully preserved circular marble dial featuring twelve individual white and blue hand-painted enamel porcelain cartouche hour plots with Roman numerals, set within a heavily chased, decorative gilt-brass bezel mask. Twin winding apertures flank the lower section of the face. Circa 1840 according to accompanying documentation. Dimensions: 23" H x 23" W x 5" Condition: Some loss to brass string inlay, some loss to brass inlay, movement needs to be examined by a professional, key not included.

Lot: 415 - 1914 Gibson F-2 Mandolin, Serial No. 19419, Kalamazoo Michigan

Gibson F-2 Mandolin, 1914 Kalamazoo, Michigan Serial No. 19419 An antique Gibson F-2 mandolin, manufactured in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1914, bearing serial number 19419. The instrument features Gibson’s distinctive F-style carved scroll body with a black-finished carved top and dark reddish-brown stained back and sides. The oval sound hole is surrounded by a decorative double-ring rosette. Period appointments include ornate tuning pegs with wire and pearl floral-decorated buttons, a metal tailpiece cover with cut-out “The Gibson” lettering, and the characteristic slanted mother-of-pearl “The Gibson” script inlay to the headstock. The F-2 represents an important early Gibson mandolin design, incorporating the carved-top construction pioneered by Orville Gibson and developed during the company’s formative years in Kalamazoo. Early F-series instruments such as this are closely associated with the development of the American carved-top mandolin in the opening decades of the 20th century. A highly sought-after 1954 Singer Featherweight 222K, known to collectors as the Queen of the Featherweights, this legendary model was manufactured exclusively at Singer's historic Kilbowie factory in Clydebank, Scotland. Unlike the standard 221 model, the 222K features a highly desirable convertible free-arm bed and a dedicated drop feed-dog lever for free-motion quilting and darning. Comes housed in its original vintage black hardshell carrying case with a functional latch, alongside the original black foot controller pedal, power cord and accessories as shown.
