Lot: 4001 - 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-67 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ.

This stunning Superb Gem Uncirculated example is fully brilliant with outstanding satin-white luster. Both sides are silky smooth in texture and present as pristine during in-hand viewing. Sharply to fully struck, as well, and sure to please even the most discerning Walking Liberty half dollar enthusiast. The Barber-designed silver coins were on their way out in 1916, when outside artists were invited to submit designs for the dime, quarter, and half dollar. For the half dollar and the dime, designs by New York City artist Adolph A. Weinman were selected. These have long been considered among the most beautiful American coin designs. The Philadelphia Mint's premier issue in the new half dollar series was produced to the extent of 608,000 pieces. Saved in significant quantities as a first year issue, the 1916 is more plentiful in Mint State than this limited mintage might imply. Demand for this popular issue remains strong, however, with the result that high grade examples in MS-64 and MS-65 are scarce from a market availability standpoint. In MS-66 the 1916 is very scarce in an absolute sense, while in PCGS MS-67 the offered coin is an exceptional condition rarity. Only the most aggressive bidding strategy will prevail here.

Lot: 4002 - 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-65 (NGC). CAC. CMQ.

A wisp of champagne-apricot iridescence adorns the smooth, satiny surfaces of this lovely Gem Mint State example. Close inspection with a loupe reveals the finely textured finish that characterizes these early date Walking Liberty half dollar issues, but not even trivial handling marks or other blemishes are seen. With a sharp to full strike and premium quality for the assigned grade, this coin is worthy of a close look prior to formulating an aggressive bidding strategy.

Lot: 4003 - 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-64 (NGC). CMQ.

Splashes of reddish-russet and orange-gold peripheral toning yield to softer pinkish-silver iridescence toward the centers. Sharply struck with a finely textured satin finish, a few trivial marks in and around the central obverse are all that preclude an even higher grade for this premium Choice Uncirculated example.

Lot: 4004 - 1916-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-67 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ.

This impressive Superb Gem has sweeping cartwheel luster that supports iridescent copper-apricot and powder blue toning that appears to drift toward the rims. Not only does this coin get high points for beauty, but for its quality as well. The strike is strong for the issue, with much hand and cap detail seen on the obverse. If you love expertly preserved silver, prepare to bid strongly for this lovely condition rarity 1916-D half dollar. Even though the dies for the new Walking Liberty half dollar did not arrive at the Denver Mint until November 27, 1916, the branch mint managed to strike 1,014,400 of the new coins, almost as many as at the Philadelphia and San Francisco mints combined. For 1916 and part of 1917, the mintmark was located on the obverse; later in 1917 it was moved to the reverse and a short-lived minor subtype was created. A couple thousand Uncirculated coins were saved as first of their kind, making this issue somewhat more available than the other two for the year. Superb Gems comprise no more than 1% of the certified Mint State population reported at PCGS, however, far fewer than needed to satisfy the demand from advanced collectors. Here is a rare opportunity for the quality conscious aficionado of 20th century silver.

Lot: 4005 - 1916-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. FS-501. Repunched Mintmark. MS-66 (PCGS). CAC. OGH.

Billowy satin luster flows serenely over finely textured, expertly preserved surfaces. The obverse is brilliant apart from a blush of pale golden-tan iridescence at upper left, while a slightly warmer shade of similar toning blankets the reverse. Crisply defined throughout, this is a thoroughly PQ upper end Gem that will please even the most discerning bidders. Writing in the 2024 edition of their Cherrypickers' Guide, Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton describe the 1916-D FS-501 as: This is a scarce variety that can be cherrypicked with a little effort and luck. It is one of the very few repunched, early mintmark Liberty Walking [sic] half dollars. The offered coin is one of the finest for this attribution that your cataloger (JLA) has ever handled, and it will make an impressive addition to an advanced Walking Liberty half dollar set. The FS-501 attribution is not noted on the Generation 3.1 PCGS holder.

Lot: 4006 - 1916-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-65 (NGC). CAC.

Delightful satin surfaces exhibit gently mottled rose-russet and powder blue peripheral iridescence around otherwise brilliant surfaces. This delightful Gem Uncirculated example is sharply to fully struck throughout and makes a lovely impression in all regards.

Lot: 4007 - 1916-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-63 (PCGS). CMQ. OGH Rattler.

Smartly impressed with bold satin to softly frosted luster, the otherwise brilliant surfaces are enhanced by wisps of pale golden-apricot iridescence at central reverse and around the peripheries on both sides.

Lot: 4008 - 1916-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-67 (NGC).

Offered here is one of the two finest certified 1916-S Walking Liberty half dollars available to today's discerning collectors. Both are graded MS-67, one at each of the two major third party certification services. A PCGS MS-67 with cert ID #6071173 was included in Heritage's May 2004 sale of the Nicholas Collection. CAC has stickered an MS-67, but according to their website that cert ID # is no longer active on the PCGS Population Report. Regardless, there is still a PCGS/CAC MS-67 listed in the population reports. The other certified MS-67 is the NGC example offered here - a leading highlight of the early date offerings from the Mack C. Chase Collection. It is a pale silver and golden-tinged Superb Gem with bold to sharp strike detail throughout the design. A full endowment of billowy mint luster flows over expertly preserved surfaces that approach numismatic perfection. Although the mintage for the 1916-S is only 100,000 coins fewer than that of the 1916 (508,000 vs. 608,000 pieces), those issued from the San Francisco Mint are far more elusive in Mint State grades; undoubtedly fewer 1916-S half dollars were set aside at the time of issue by contemporary Americans looking for keepsakes of the newly introduced Walking Liberty design. With most Uncirculated survivors grading no finer than MS-64, this high Condition Census example is eagerly awaiting inclusion in one of the finest Walking Liberty half dollar sets currently being formed.

Lot: 4009 - 1916-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-65 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. OGH.

If the top-pop NGC MS-67 offered in the preceding lot is beyond one's means, the present PCGS MS-65 also ranks as a superior quality coin in a 1916-S half dollar. Its surfaces are brilliant and softly lustrous, the satiny texture fully appreciable in the absence of troublesome marks. Sharply to fully struck throughout the design, this is a premium quality coin for the assigned grade that will sell for a strong bid.

Lot: 4010 - 1916-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-62 (NGC). CAC. CMQ.

Tinged in light golden-copper and silver gray, this pleasing BU example also offers bold to sharp strike detail throughout the design. The luster is a bit subdued to explain the MS-62 grade from NGC, but the surfaces are remarkably smooth overall with not even a single distracting mark in evidence. A PQ coin for the assigned grade, and worthy of a close look prior to bidding.

Lot: 4011 - 1917 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-67 (PCGS).

An extraordinary condition rarity, this is one of the finest 1917 Walking Liberty half dollars known to PCGS. It is a virtually brilliant coin, although the otherwise silver white surfaces reveal tinges of pale golden-russet iridescence here and there around the obverse periphery. Strike detail is as close to full as could realistically be expected for an early date half dollar of this design type, and the mint luster is as smooth and intense as the day the coin emerged from the dies. The second year 1917 ranks as the most readily obtainable early date (pre-1934) Walking Liberty half dollar issue in Mint State. The issue is extraordinarily popular for better date type purposes, as such, although most collectors will have to accept a coin that grades no finer than MS-65. Scarce in upper end Gem MS-66 and rare in Superb Gem MS-67, the offered coin ranks high in the Condition Census and would do equally well in a top flight type or date set.

An elegant example, both sides are peripherally toned in soft golden-apricot iridescence that yields to circular areas of brilliance in the centers. Billowy satin luster is seen throughout, the surfaces universally smooth and expectably well preserved for the assigned grade. With a sharply executed strike, as well, this piece will appeal to quality conscious collectors.

Lot: 4015 - 1917-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Obverse Mintmark. MS-66 (PCGS).

This glorious Gem is as beautiful as it is pristine, showcasing a subtle champagne-gold iridescence that yields to brilliance as the coin rotates into direct lighting. Very sharply rendered, with copious mint luster and a soft matte-like texture in the fields. Not even magnified inspection exposes a noteworthy blemish, and the eye appeal is exceptional. The 1917-D Obverse Mintmark variety has the lowest mintage figure of any of the mintmarked varieties of the date. It is scarce in lower Mint State grades and rare in Gem Uncirculated and above. The present piece represents the superior quality for the issue as seen by PCGS, surpassed by one two grading events in MS-66+. Many of the most advanced Walking Liberty half dollar sets would be enhanced by inclusion of this stunning condition rarity.

Delightful satin-white surfaces are fully lustrous and brilliant. Both sides are sharply struck, as well, with overall superior quality that would accept nothing less than a Gem Mint State grade. Billowy satin luster shines forth powerfully from both sides of this brilliant, pearlescent example. Well struck, we note bold to sharp detail to all design elements. With a smoother appearance in-hand than typically seen for an early date Walking Liberty half dollar in certified MS-64, this PQ coin will surely catch the eye of astute bidders.

Lot: 4018 - 1917-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Reverse Mintmark. MS-67 (PCGS).

Offered is the single finest 1917-D Reverse Mintmark half dollar known to PCGS. It is an exquisite example with full, billowy mint luster in a delightful satin texture. The surfaces are expectably smooth for the assigned grade, the in-hand appearance temptingly close to numismatic perfection. Bold to sharp strike detail further enhances the desirability of this awe-inspiring Superb Gem. In 1917 the mintmarks on half dollars were found on both the obverse and the reverse, though beginning in 1918 they were placed on the reverse only, remaining there through the Franklin half dollar series. Though the 1917-D half dollar with reverse mintmark is somewhat more available in circulated grades than its obverse mintmark counterpart, in Mint State grades the reverse mintmark style is considerably scarcer and more desirable. If you are assembling the finest Walking Liberty half dollar set, this unrivalled and unsurpassed PCGS MS-67 is a must-have coin whose offering in this sale is worthy of the most aggressive bidding strategy.

Lot: 4019 - 1917-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Reverse Mintmark. MS-65 (NGC). OH.

Dusted with mottled rose-russet, powder blue and/or golden-copper peripheral iridescence, both sides are brilliant in and around the centers. Full satin to softly frosted luster is readily appreciable at all viewing angles, as are boldly to sharply defined motifs. Carefully preserved to suggest an even higher Gem Mint State assessment, this is a noteworthy condition rarity for the 1917-D Reverse Mintmark half dollar, an issue that can be challenging to locate even in lower Uncirculated grades.

Lot: 4020 - 1917-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Reverse Mintmark. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ.

A boldly struck, softly lustrous example that approaches full Gem Mint State preservation. Both sides are attractively original with light golden-gray patina joined by blushes of somewhat deeper rose-russet iridescence at the borders. Very nice.

Lot: 4021 - 1917-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Obverse Mintmark. MS-66 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ.

A phenomenal condition rarity for the issue in this grade, our only other offering of a 1917-S Obverse Mintmark half dollar in PCGS MS-66 over the last 25 years or more was the then fresh-to-market Silas Stanley Roberts specimen that brought $40,800 in our June 2021 Auction. The example presented here is a golden-tinged Gem that presents as brilliant at most viewing angles. Intensely lustrous with a razor sharp strike, the surfaces are expertly preserved and approach numismatic perfection for the issue. The 1917-S keeps company with eight others in the Walking Liberty series that had mintages of fewer than one million pieces. Only 952,000 half dollars were struck in 1917 with the mintmark on the obverse, in fact, and for many years this was considered one of the key dates to the series. Today, however, the 1917-S Obverse Mintmark is known to be fairly available in grades from About Uncirculated to MS-63. In MS-64 and MS-65 it remains rare while the MS-66 offered here is exceedingly so and worthy of the strongest bids.

A thoroughly PQ near-Gem Uncirculated example with billowy mint luster that blends nicely with delicate antique silver tinting. Sharply struck and uncommonly smooth even for the MS-64 grade assigned by PCGS, we anticipate strong bidder competition for this lovely piece.

Lot: 4023 - 1917-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Reverse Mintmark. MS-66 (PCGS).

Beautiful satin to softly frosted surfaces are brilliant apart from wisps of delicate reddish-gold iridescence that appear to drift toward the borders. The strike is superior for this challenging San Francisco Mint issue with only minor softness on the high points that in no way detracts. What is even more incredible here is the quality of the fields and devices, for close inspection with a loupe finds no marks or other blemishes that distract the eye. The conditionally challenged 1917-S Reverse Mintmark is a much rarer Walking Liberty half dollar in the finer Mint State grades than a sizable mintage of 5.5 million pieces might imply. This is a second-year issue in its series, which means that it benefited from neither the first-year status of the 1916 issues nor the more advanced numismatic activity of the 1940s, both of which resulted in the saving of greater numbers of Mint State coins. Scarce even in MS-64, the extant population of the 1917-S Reverse Mintmark in Gem Uncirculated dwindles down to fewer than 100 distinct survivors. At the MS-66 level the present example is one of the very finest certified in this highly select group, and it is a coin that would make an outstanding addition to an advanced Walking Liberty half dollar set.

Dusted with gently mottled sandy-gold and reddish-apricot patina, this otherwise silvery Gem Mint State example also delivers strong luster in a soft, billowy texture. Boldly to sharply struck and uncommonly well preserved in a survivor of this conditionally challenged San Francisco Mint Walking Liberty half dollar issue.

This wonderfully original example is peripherally toned in gently mottled champagne-pink and russet iridescence. Brilliant in the centers with a full quota of soft, satiny mint luster. The strike is crisp, in fact as close to full as one could realistically expect to find for this challenging issue, and the surfaces are impressively smooth at the assigned grade level. Thoroughly PQ for both the issue and the assigned grade, we recommend an aggressive bidding strategy for this noteworthy 1917-S Reverse Mintmark half dollar.

Lot: 4026 - 1918 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-66 (PCGS).

A fully defined, handsomely toned example with richly mottled reddish-russet and steel-rose to a base of antique silver. Blushes of emerald green iridescence within the eagle's wing feathers near the right reverse border provide further visual appeal. The surfaces are also dressed in full, billowy mint luster that is as smooth and blemish-free as on the day of striking. Both the technical quality and eye appeal are outstanding. The 1918 has a mintage of 6,634,000 pieces, a generous total for a pre-1934 Walking Liberty half dollar, and is among the more readily available early date issues in this series, but only in circulated grades. Mint State survivors are surprisingly difficult to find, and most grade no finer than MS-64. Scarce in MS-65, the 1918 is rare in higher grades, and the present example represents a rare find for astute Walking Liberty half dollar enthusiasts.

Lot: 4028 - 1918 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-64 (PCGS).

This lovely piece exhibits a seamless blend of golden-apricot iridescence and full, billowy, satin-textured luster. Sharply struck and crisp with surfaces that are smooth enough to evoke thoughts of an even higher Mint State grade. Worthy of a close look, and also a strong bid.

Lot: 4029 - 1918-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-66 (PCGS). CMQ.

This is the finest example of the issue that we can ever recall handling, which is perhaps not surprising given the PCGS population of just 3/1 for the 1918-D half dollar in MS-66. An extraordinary upper end Gem, both sides are virtually pristine with a smooth, inviting appearance. Essentially brilliant, although more studied inspection reveals a few blushes of champagne-gold iridescence that provide further visual appeal. Impressively sharp in strike, and close to full in this regard, this is an outstanding coin for the date that is worthy of the strongest bids. Produced during the final year of World War I when the United States' economy was still strong due to the nation's participation in that conflict, the 1918-D had a generous mintage of 3.8 million pieces. The demands of commerce were great, however, and the vast majority of examples entered circulation at the time of issue and remained there until heavily worn or lost. The result is that the 1918-D is now numbered among the rarer Walking Liberty half dollars even in lower Mint State grades. The typical Uncirculated survivor is limited in grade by subdued luster, excessive surface abrasions and/or soft strike detail in and around the centers. Writing in the 2008 book Collecting & Investing Strategies for Walking Liberty Half Dollars, specialist Jeff Ambio ranks the 1918-D as the third rarest issue in this series at and above the MS-65 grade level.

Lot: 4030 - 1918-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-64 (NGC). CAC.

Boldly to sharply defined, both sides also possess full mint luster in a satin to softly frosted texture. Further enhanced by delicate gold and silver iridescence, this is a lovely Choice Uncirculated example of a conditionally challenged Denver Mint issue from the early Walking Liberty series.

Lot: 4031 - 1918-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-66 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ.

A delight to behold, the luster across this stunning premium Gem vacillates between satiny and frosty in different regions. The surfaces are predominantly pearly and platinum-white, though the peripheries are enhanced by blushes of iridescent golden-copper patina that are boldest at lower right reverse. Untroubled by marks of any consequence, and uncommonly well struck by the standards of this challenging issue. Although the mintage for the 1918-S was seemingly plentiful at more than 10 million pieces, examples are surprisingly scarce in higher Mint State grades. With the United States' economy in full swing during the final year of World War I, the pressing need for new coinage in the avenues of commerce precluded most 1918-S half dollars from remaining Uncirculated. Hence, this issue is rare even at the certified MS-65 grade level. In PCGS MS-66, the present example is the finest we can ever recall offering and should be pursued by any serious specialist who needs a premium example for their collection.

Lot: 4032 - 1918-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-65 (NGC).

A rare second offering for a condition rarity Gem Mint State 1918-S half dollar in our present sale of the outstanding Mack C. Chase Collection. This NGC-certified beauty is toned in blended champagne-pink and powder blue iridescence with blushes of copper-russet patina nestled in the protected areas along the rims and around some of the design elements. Boldly struck and fully lustrous throughout, there is much to recommend this coin for inclusion in an advanced Walking Liberty half dollar set.

Lot: 4033 - 1918-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ.

Soft satin luster blends with warm champagne-gold iridescence that is a bit bolder on the obverse. Uncommonly well struck with emerging detail to the troublesome high points, a predominantly smooth and visually pleasing appearance further define this is a premium example in a 1918-S half dollar.

Lot: 4034 - 1919 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-66 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ.

This is an exceptionally well preserved and attractive 1919 half dollar, an issue that is scarce even in lower Mint State grades. Virtually full in striking detail, both sides also offer smooth, satiny mint luster. Lightly and originally toned, as well, we note wisps of iridescent champagne-pink that yield to brilliance at many viewing angles. Instantly recognizable as a key date issue, the 1919 has one of the lowest mintages in the Walking Liberty half dollar series with just 962,000 coins struck. It is ninth rarest in Mint State of the 26 issues between 1916 and 1933. Gems are in the distinct minority among survivors, and the present example would serve as a highlight in even the finest Walking Liberty half dollar set.

Lot: 4035 - 1919 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC. OGH.

This richly original example is dressed in iridescent silver-mauve patina with speckled rose-russet highlights that appear to drift toward the peripheries. With a bold to sharp strike and full quota of billowy mint luster, this is a premium near-Gem Uncirculated example of a highly desirable, low mintage Walking Liberty half dollar issue.

Lot: 4036 - 1919-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-65 (PCGS).

Here is a rare and highly desirable Gem Uncirculated example of this key date half dollar issue. Both sides display abundant luster, the surfaces satiny in texture and enhanced by iridescent champagne-pink and powder blue toning. Boldly to sharply struck throughout with a remarkably smooth appearance in a survivor of this challenging issue. In Mint State this is the third rarest issue of its type, surpassed by only the 1921-S and 1919-S. However, it is a severe strike rarity, with most Uncirculated examples flatly struck in the centers and limited to grades well below Gem. From a mintage of just 1,165,000 pieces, this well struck piece is highly significant and sure to appeal to astute Walking Liberty half dollar enthusiasts.

Lot: 4037 - 1919-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-63 (PCGS).

Lightly toned in iridescent champagne-gold that is bolder on the obverse, this lustrous example exhibits a softly frosted, overall smooth texture to both sides. The strike is impressively sharp for this challenging issue, the central high points on both sides with emerging to bold definition. A leading strike and condition rarity in the Walking Liberty half dollar series, the 1919-D can be difficult to locate even in EF and AU. In Mint State this is the third rarest issue of its type, trailing only the 1919-S and the low mintage 1921-S. Even the 1921-D is a bit easier to obtain in Mint State than the 1919-D, despite a much lower mintage of 208,000 vs. 1,165,000 coins. This handsome Select example is a significant find for the advanced Walking Liberty half dollar collector.

Lot: 4038 - 1919-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-66 (PCGS). CMQ.

One of the finest 1919-S half dollars that we have handled in recent memory, this impressive premium Gem is exceptionally well preserved with a silky smooth appearance to both sides. This example features a noteworthy strike for the issue, with emerging to bold detail in the centers and sharp to full definition elsewhere. Lightly toned in pale gold iridescence, this lovely coin will be just right for a top ranked Walking Liberty half dollar set on the PCGS Registry. A key date issue for its type in circulated grades, the 1919-S has a mintage of just 1,552,000 pieces. In Mint State it is the second rarest issue in this series after the 1921-S (per Jeff Ambio, Collecting & Investing Strategies for Walking Liberty Half Dollars, 2008). Most survivors grade no finer than MS-64 due to impaired luster, numerous wispy abrasions and/or excessive softness of strike in the prime focal areas. Strong bids are encouraged for the present lot, as it may be quite some time before another 1919-S half dollar with such solid technical quality and strong eye appeal becomes available.

Lot: 4039 - 1919-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-64 (NGC).

In short, this is one of the nicest certified MS-64 examples of the key date 1919-S half dollar that we have offered in recent years. Intensely lustrous, the brilliant surfaces exhibit a bold frosty finish as the coin rotates under lighting. The strike detail is uncommonly full for this challenging issue, even Liberty's head and the central high points on both sides showing bold definition. Bright, brilliant and uncommonly smooth in overall appearance for the assigned grade, this is a delightful condition scarcity from a heavily circulated issue with just 1.5 million pieces produced.

A highly lustrous and visually appealing example of this conditionally challenged early date Walking Liberty half dollar issue. Brilliant apart from the lightest pale silver tinting, both sides also display strong mint luster. The texture is satiny with modest cartwheel visual affects discernible as the coin rotates under a light. The strike wanes a bit at isolated high points, typical of the type, although it is razor sharp to full elsewhere. Very smooth for a mintmarked half dollar from the Roaring Twenties, and sure to appeal to specialists. Full Gem Uncirculated examples of this date are very rare and are in far shorter supply than a number of notable higher priced Gem issues such as 1917-D Obverse Mintmark, 1917-D Reverse Mintmark, 1919-S, 1921, and 1923-S. This underrated issue certainly deserves more recognition as a challenging rarity; PCGS has graded only six coins in MS-66 with a single MS-66+ finer than the present example. With overall superior quality, this coin is worthy of very strong bids.

Blooms of iridescent golden-copper toning engage the left and right peripheral areas of both sides of this otherwise bright silver example. A few minor marks are easily forgiven at the assigned grade level, although somewhat more distracting is an old, light finger mark at right reverse. Overall strike detail is uncommonly bold for this challenging issue, which confirms this as a noteworthy Select Uncirculated 1920-D half dollar.

Lot: 4045 - 1920-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-67 (NGC).

An unrivalled and unsurpassed condition rarity in a 1920-S Walking Liberty half dollar. This beautiful Superb Gem is lightly toned in iridescent gold with a full endowment of intense satin to softly frosted luster. It is smooth and appealing with a sharply executed strike by the standards of this challenging S-Mint issue. Expertly preserved and virtually pristine. After producing only 1,552,000 half dollars in 1919, the San Francisco Mint increased its output for this denomination to 4,624,000 coins in 1920. The 1920-S is among the more challenging Walking Liberty half dollars to locate in Mint State, especially with a combination of Gem surface preservation and superior striking quality. In terms of total number of Uncirculated coins extant, in fact, the 1920-S ranks 10th in rarity among the 65 circulation strike issues of this type. This is the single finest certified example in today's market, and would serve as a centerpiece in the most advanced Walking Liberty half dollar set.

Lot: 4046 - 1920-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-66 (NGC).

In his cataloging for this coin when offered in Part II of the John Jay Pittman Collection sale, David W. Akers provided this interesting commentary on the 1920-S half dollar: In the mid-1970's, a small group of original and high quality examples of this issue was uncovered. This group was reported to consist of at least one original roll, and some accounts have indicated that there may have been as many as two or three original rolls. I saw many of the pieces from this group and they were of uniformly high quality, many quite well struck, and all with full mint luster; some of the coins had attractive light toning as well. This Pittman specimen offered here obviously pre-dates the "hoard" by many years and so, at the time of purchase, it undoubtedly was considered rare and one of the finest known examples of this issue. Based on current third party certification data, it remains one of the finest 1920-S half dollars available to discerning specialists in the Walking Liberty series. Warmly toned in a blend of antique silver and sandy-gold, both sides exhibit a smooth satin texture that would accept nothing less than a premium Gem Mint State grade. The bold strike and impressive numismatic provenance will be of further interest to advanced bidders.

Lot: 4047 - 1920-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-64 (PCGS).

Satiny in texture with minimal golden tinting, the obverse contrasts somewhat with a more frosty-textured reverse that also sports warmer iridescent golden-apricot toning. Typical (for the issue) softness in the centers precludes a full Gem Mint State grade, but the surfaces reveal few marks of even a minor nature, and certainly none that are distracting to the eye. This is a superior 1920-S half dollar at the certified MS-64 level, and it is sure to see spirited bidding from astute Walking Liberty half dollar enthusiasts.

Lot: 4048 - 1921 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-65 (PCGS). CMQ.

Otherwise brilliant and generally pearly white, this lovely example of a fabled key date 20th century silver issue is enhanced by reddish-gold peripheral iridescence that is more extensive on the reverse. Both sides are fully endowed with strong, softly frosted mint luster. The strike is as close to full as one could realistically expect in an early date Walking Liberty half dollar, and the surfaces are virtually distraction free and solidly graded at the Gem level. This prized rarity has always been in high demand, as the low mintage of 246,000 pieces pointed early attention to these, but not until most had already entered circulation. Demand for new half dollars was low that year as the world economy adjusted sharply, reflecting the changes from war driven production to peacetime activities as World War I had concluded a few years prior. Of those 1921 half dollars saved, not many retain the Gem level surfaces desired by many collectors so pricing pressure has always been rather high when a Gem does appear on the market. With precious few certified finer by either PCGS or NGC, this is an exceptional example of this key date issue and destined for another high end cabinet or Registry Set.

Satiny pinkish-silver surfaces are overall boldly defined with an uncommonly smooth appearance for the assigned grade. One of the most popular and eagerly sought issues in the entire Walking Liberty half dollar series, the 1921 has the second lowest mintage of the type at just 246,000 pieces. Writing in the 2008 book Collecting & Investing Strategies for Walking Liberty Half Dollars, our own Jeff Ambio ranks this issue seventh in overall Mint State rarity for the series. This is a generally pearly and brilliant Gem with just a hint of champagne-pink iridescence accenting both sides. The original mint finish is full, strong, and displays a lovely satin texture. Fully without distractions and delightful to examine in-hand. The 1921-D has the lowest mintage among Denver Mint Walking Liberty half dollars with just 208,000 pieces produced. A key date issue for its type, only the 1919-D, 1919-S and 1921-S are rarer in terms of total number of Mint State coins extant. With precious few Gems known, this premium quality example represents a particularly significant opportunity for Walking Liberty half dollar enthusiasts. An ideal PCGS Set Registry candidate, and made even more desirable by an impressive provenance.

Lot: 4051 - 1921-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-62 (PCGS).

Minimally toned in iridescent champagne-pink, this otherwise pearl-gray example delivers a bold strike and good luster at the certified BU grade level. A very elusive and desirable issue in Mint State, of which only 275 to 375 pieces are believed extant. This 1921-D Walker is a find for the advanced collector, and worthy of the strongest bids.

Remarkably well preserved for this conditionally challenged key date issue, this phenomenal 1921-S half dollar offers impressively sharp strike detail that even extends to the central high points. Blushes of iridescent toning in champagne-apricot are most pronounced toward the right borders. The surfaces are smooth, frosty and highly attractive, and will appeal to even the most discerning specialist in this series. Although produced in greater numbers than both the 1921 and 1921-D, the 1921-S (548,000 coins struck) is the leading Walking Liberty half dollar rarity in Mint State. Our own Jeff Ambio (Collecting & Investing Strategies for Walking Liberty Half Dollars, 2008) ranks the 1921-S as the second rarest issue of its type at and above the MS-65 grade level. He accounts for only 150 to 210 survivors in all Mint State grades, such a paltry total confirming that this issue suffered a much higher rate of attrition through circulation than its 1921-dated counterparts from the Philadelphia and Denver mints. The 1921-S is also an important strike rarity, and it is only once in a very long while that the opportunity arises to acquire such a sharp and attractive Gem as this Mack C. Chase specimen.

A most impressive example of this conditionally challenged, early date S-Mint issue in the Walking Liberty half dollar series. Both sides of this solidly graded Gem are pleasingly smooth overall. A tad lightly struck in the centers, yet sharp to full elsewhere, softly frosted luster blankets all areas with a smooth, even texture. Untoned apart from delicate golden highlights at the borders. This is the rarest issue in Gem Mint State condition of the similar 1923-S, 1928-S and 1929-S trio, and hence brings a solid price. The mintage came in at 2,178,000 pieces for the year, as demand had slacked off with the sharp economic downtrend of the prior year. Thus, these tougher times meant fewer half dollars were saved, and this is born out in the surviving numbers. This memorable coin is worthy of an advanced collection and will certainly please any specialist for its surface quality and eye appeal.

Lot: 4055 - 1923-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-63 (PCGS). CAC.

Desirable Select Uncirculated quality for this scarce and conditionally challenged Roaring Twenties half dollar issue. Lightly toned in antique silver and gold iridescence, the surfaces are lustrous with a well composed appearance at the assigned grade level. The 1923-S is the only half dollar produced in the United States Mint from 1922 through 1926, which fact resulted in strong demand in commercial channels. Mint State survivors are scarce, as such, the issue ranking in the top 10 for its type at this level of preservation. A find for the specialist that would serve with distinction in an advanced Walking Liberty half dollar set.

Lot: 4056 - 1927-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-65 (PCGS). CMQ.

A premium quality Gem, this lovely coin boasts fulsome mint luster and uncommonly smooth surfaces even for the MS-65 grade from PCGS. Otherwise brilliant, delicate champagne-gold iridescence engages the peripheries and flashes into view as the coin rotates under a light. Well struck in most areas, softness to the obverse high points is noted and seems to be the only impediment to an even higher numeric grade. The 1927-S Walking Liberty half dollar is a conditionally challenged issue with a mintage of 2,392,000 pieces. Like the 1923-S and 1928-S, the 1927-S as an issue was heavily circulated and can be elusive even in the lowest Mint State grades. Gems are rare, the present example a significant find for the astute bidder.

Bluntly struck in the centers, not uncommon for the issue, but the level of surface preservation alone would support a full Gem Mint State grade. Scarce Roaring Twenties half dollar issue.

This is a significant coin in a 1928-S half dollar, Uncirculated examples of which are elusive and typically confined to the lowest grades due to poor strike detail and/or noticeably abraded surfaces. Both sides of this solidly graded Gem are silky smooth in appearance with a full endowment of billowy mint frost. Pretty peripheral toning in iridescent copper-apricot and powder blue is more extensive on the reverse. A bit lightly struck at Liberty's head and in the obverse center, typical of the issue, but the detail is bold to sharp otherwise and particularly impressive at central reverse. Alone among 1928-dated issues in the Walking Liberty half dollar series, the 1928-S is scarce to rare in all Mint State grades and more challenging to collect than the 1927-S. This piece offers particularly desirable Gem quality as certified in a PCGS Generation 3.0 holder.

Lot: 4060 - 1929-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-66 (PCGS). CMQ.

An otherwise brilliant premium Gem displaying wisps of delicate champagne-gold iridescence at the borders. Richly frosted and free from notable friction or marks. The 1929-D Walking Liberty half dollar represents the first half dollar struck in Denver since 1921. Its mintage of 1,001,200 pieces is among the lower quantities for a pre-1930s issue, though it still pales in comparison to the output of half dollars in the post-Depression era. The crash of the stock market on October 29, 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression restricted the dispersal of much of this issue, and the coins instead sat in Treasury vaults for several years before being slowly released in the 1930s. By then, half dollar mintages had already risen enough to meet demand and a surprising percentage of this issue remains in Mint State relative to the mintage. Even so, Gem examples are extremely scarce. The present piece approaches the finest survivors of the issue and would do nicely in a high quality set.

Boldly struck with lovely champagne-pink iridescence to lustrous, satiny surfaces.

A vivid and beautifully toned example with gently mottled multicolored iridescence adorning both sides. The right obverse periphery shows the boldest colors in reddish-rose, sunset-orange and antique gold. The fields offer faint reflectivity, courtesy of zealous die polishing on the part of Mint employees. Intensely lustrous and appearing virtually undisturbed even when viewed with the aid of a loupe. Trailing only the 1933-S, the 1929-S is overall the second most available San Francisco Mint half dollar of the 1916 to 1933 era. As with its identically dated Denver Mint counterpart, the onset of the Great Depression kept many examples from being released until the mid 1930s, by which time the coins were desired by numismatists and speculators. However, few survivors are as carefully preserved and aesthetically pleasing as this premium quality Superb Gem. It ranks among the very finest certified. For collectors seeking the absolute best, this is a significant opportunity.

Lot: 4063 - 1929-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-65 (PCGS).

Boldly struck with attractive toning, this inviting Gem also sports full mint luster in a smooth frosty texture. Similar to the 1929-D, the 1929-S is more readily obtainable in Mint State than the limited mintage of the issue might imply, in this case 1,902,000 coins. Once again, most examples were retained in federal vaults during the worst years of the Great Depression, many subsequently finding their way into the hands of contemporary numismatists. This is an outstanding survivor, both better struck and better preserved than the typical example offered in today's market.

This impressive example of both the type and the issue will delight even the most exacting numismatist. Sharply struck throughout, as often noted for the issue. Silky smooth in texture with bountiful mint luster and delicate peripheral iridescence further enhancing its appeal. This is the only half dollar delivery of its year, and it is the final issue in what numismatic scholars consider the early Walking Liberty series. The 1933-S is a favorite with collectors since, unlike many other San Francisco issues of the type, it is often found with a razor sharp to full strike. It is also the most readily obtainable S-Mint Walker of the 1916 to 1933 era, which further enhances its desirability for advanced type purposes. Conditionally scarce, however, are examples that grade above the basal MS-65 level. Indeed, this is one of the finest 1933-S half dollars that we have offered in recent years, a coin that is seemingly earmarked for inclusion in a particularly impressive type set or carefully assembled Walking Liberty collection.

The first Proof half dollar struck in the United States Mint since 1915, and the first of the Walking Liberty design type, the popularity of the 1936 with today's collectors knows no bounds. This is also the key date issue among Proof Walkers, the mintage of 3,901 pieces lower than that of the other six issues in this brief Proof series. The error is probably that discovered by Neil Osina in 1981, per Walter Breen, and it is documented in the Cherrypicker's Guide, by Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton, with commentary that it is "unknown above Fine."

Here is a predominantly brilliant and pearlescent beauty, with delicate champagne-gold iridescence that appears to drift toward the rims. Softly frosted luster is seen throughout, and the strike is above average for the issue with emerging to bold definition in the centers. The surfaces are as pristine as would be expected for the assigned grade. Struck on the West Coast on the very cusp of the United States' official entry into World War II, the 1941-S has traditionally been considered the undisputed key date issue in the popular Walking Liberty half dollar "short set" of 1941 to 1947. It has a mintage of 8,098,000 pieces, and while not the smallest in the series, the nation's burgeoning wartime economy and the tumultuous events of the deadliest conflict in human history resulted in relatively few examples being spared circulation. Even so, enough were preserved to make the 1941-S readily obtainable in Mint State grades below MS-67. At this level the issue is exceedingly rare, the present example among the finest certified at NGC. A true prize for the advanced collector of this popular 20th century silver series.

Representing the scarcest issue in the 1941 to 1947 "short set" in high grade, this is an exceptionally well preserved example that ranks among the higher graded examples seen at PCGS. Smooth, vibrantly lustrous surfaces are dusted with hints of iridescent toning in gold, powder blue and pale lilac that accents the sharply struck devices. Due to the rarity in MS-67 grades, we suspect the PCGS Population Report shows some duplication of submissions in hopes of attaining that grade. This high end MS-66 example is worthy of placement in any top tier set.

The Proof 1942 Walking Liberty half dollar is an historic issue struck at the dawn of the United States official entry into World War II. It represents not only the final Proof issue of the Walking Liberty series, but the last Proof half dollar struck until 1950, when the Franklin series was already underway. 21,120 Proof halves were struck in 1942, though only about half of them survive in grades of Proof-65 or higher. The present NGC Proof-69 * is one of the two most exceptional survivors known - rivaled only on a lone Proof-69 reported at PCGS - and is deserving of the strongest bids.

This frosty and virtually brilliant 1943-D half dollar is bathed in silky smooth mint luster. Boldly struck with a lovely frosty texture from perfectly refinished dies. Faint blooms of champagne-apricot iridescence decorate the peripheries to provide further visual appeal. With a mintage of 11,346,000 pieces, the 1943-D is the scarcest half dollar of the year, its production falling almost 42 million coins short of the quantity struck in Philadelphia. The overall production quality was high for this issue, although copious bag marks and other blemishes mean that most coins are in certified grades of MS-66 or lower. The present MS-68 is an incredible exception, ranking near the very top of the NGC Census with only a dozen other grading events.

By 1944 the United States' economy was well into the boom of the Second World War and the mints were busy churning out millions of new coins for use in commerce. The Philadelphia Mint struck 28,206,000 half dollars that year, and survivors have always been plentiful up through MS-66. However, this focus on quantity created compromises in quality, and many 1944 half dollars show inconsistent strike and weak luster. This lovely Superb Gem is a noteworthy exception, with bold to sharp detail throughout the design. It is highly lustrous with enhancing blushes of pale powder blue and champagne-gold iridescence.

We have seen only one other 1944-D half dollar that equals this coin - the unique PCGS MS-68 example that brought $57,600 in our June 2021 sale of the Lulu Collection. This NGC-certified piece is also a memorable example that exhibits a blend of sparkling brilliance and intense mint luster. Both sides are virtually pristine, as befits the certified grade, and they are also well struck with all design elements boldly to sharply rendered. The 1944-D marks the beginning of a trend in decreasing yearly mintages for Denver Mint half dollars that would continue through the end of the Walking Liberty series in 1947. Just 9,769,000 pieces were struck for the 1944-D, and production would progress down to lows of 2.1 million in 1946 and 3.9 million to close out the series in 1947. Mint State survivors of the 1944-D, while plentiful in an absolute sense, are seldom found in certified grades above MS-66. In this context, it is impossible to overstate the significance of the present example in NGC MS-68. It is the sole finest certified by this service, and it simply cannot be improved upon. For those seeking the absolute highest numismatic quality, this is it for 1944-D Walking Liberty half dollars.

Brilliant throughout, this exquisite Superb Gem makes a lovely impression in all regards. It is sharply struck with a full quota of smooth, billowy mint luster. At the threshold of numismatic perfection for the issue, this superior 1945 would serve as a highlight in an advanced Walking Liberty half dollar set. Struck during the final year of World War II, the 1945 is the last of the high mintage half dollar issues in the Walking Liberty "short set" of 1941 to 1947. The 31.5 million-piece issue has provided an abundance of Mint State coins, and even more selective numismatists should be able to procure an attractive MS-67 with a modicum of patience. One of the most common Walking Liberty half dollars from all eras in Mint State, and the most common in Gem MS-65 and higher grades, the 1946-D clearly benefitted from its production after the end of World War II in 1945. The Allied victory led to a contraction in the United States' economy beginning in 1946 which, in turn, led to reduced demand for new circulating coinage. This reduced demand resulted in a mintage of just 2,151,000 pieces for the 1946-D - the lowest in the Walking Liberty "short set" of 1941 to 1947. The smaller mintage led to widespread hoarding on the part of contemporary dealers and speculators, who set aside large numbers of Mint State examples. Since this issue is both well produced and well preserved, it is an outstanding type candidate for collectors of high quality U.S. Mint coinage.

Frosty in texture and sharply struck throughout, this otherwise untoned Superb Gem exhibits pretty tan-gold highlights at the borders. With the San Francisco Mint striking its last Walking Liberty half dollars in 1946, it fell to the Philadelphia and Denver facilities to close out this iconic series in 1947. Although readily obtainable in an absolute sense, our own Jeff Ambio (2008) states: ...the 1947 is an underrated coin much like the 1946. It is rarer than the 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945, as well as the 1941-D, 1943-D, 1944-D, 1945-D, 1946-D and 1946-S in high grades. Clearly this is a key date issue in the Walking Liberty half dollar "short set" of 1941 to 1947. Quality-conscious collectors specializing in this popular series would be wise to secure this above average example.
